February/March news round-up............


Semi's for Egan in trip to Tipp!
Mick Egan reached the Semi Finals of todays Irelands Players Championships in Nenagh. 90 players took part on the day with Egan including wins over Andrew McCarthy, 5-0; John Herlihy 5-2; Ian Dobson 5-2; and Christy Fisher, 5-0. Having led 5-3 in the semi, Egan went down on a 6-5 scoreline to Campbell Jackson. It's easily the best run at a Players Championships event by a Roscommon player and keeps him on course to qualify for his third successive finals. Wexford's Stephen Byrne was winner of todays event beating Jackson 6-2 in the final.

Heneghan captures Kelly Cup.
Mayo's Martin Heneghan became the youngest winner of the Martin Kelly Memorial Cup which took place in The Hollywood Bar, in Roscommon town on March 6th. The 19 year old from Roundfort, and Ireland International was best of the 52 players took part on the day, with several counties represented. Defending Champion Mick Egan bowed out in the last 16 beaten by Francis Hussey who reached the semi finals. Recent A1 Roofing Ltd winner Paul Carton was also out by the last 8. Surprise package from all the Roscommon players present was eventual runner-up Alan Loughnane who put in some great displays both before and in the final. Loughnane also picked up highest checkout prize for his 150 effort in winning against Joe Crawley in the last 8. 
The raffle which took place on the day raised €500 for Cancer Research.

Roscommon involvement in University Darts success.
McDermott's of Ballinaheglish team mates David Concannon, Mark Finneran, and Gary Concannon enjoyed success at the UDC U.D.A.I. All Ireland University Darts Teams College Intervarsities on Saturday with GMIT. At the group stage they beat Carlow IT (C) 5-0, Carlow IT (B) 5-1, NUIG (B) 5-1. IT Tallaght were opposition in the semi finals where they enjoyed a 6-2 win. After going 3-1 down in the final a 7-6 win over GMIT sealed victory. NUIG (A) Panel-  David Concannon, Mark Finneran, Gary Concannon, Stiofán "DANGER" de Lundres Ó Dálaigh and Chris Clyne.


Egan on International duty.
The Widow Pat's and Roscommon Intercounty darts player Mick Egan travelled with the Republic of Ireland 6-a-side darts team that took part in the annual 6 Nations Cup in Scotland on February 25th-27th. The Six Nations Cup, featuring the national teams (men and women) of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands, was played at the Erskine Bridge Hotel, Erskine, Renfrewshire on February 25th, 26th and 27th. England Men defended their title, and Wales Women won out the Ladies competition. The Republic of Ireland mens team lost out 13-8 to both Holland and Wales, before going down 13-9 to Northern Ireland in the 5th/6th place play-off.
Egan was an unused sub for the first two games, before finally getting a chance against the North, and put in a decent effort securing 2 of the Republics 9 points.


Paddy Higgins Cup heads North.
The Paddy Higgins Cup headed North for the seconds year, as Tyrone's Campbell Jackson won the 2nd annual Paddy Higgins Cup held in The Goal Post in Ballinagare on February 20th in which nearly 50 players took part. Jon Paul Feeney was best of the Roscommon contingent having a run to the semi finals where he was beaten by eventual runner up John Bosclair (Mayo).


Youths title charge ends at group stage.
The Roscommon Youths teams charge for I.N.D.O. All Ireland Championship glory ended at group stage last Saturday. Roscommon's panel was divided into two teams with Roscommon's promising B team losing out to Mayo (3-2), and Donegal (4-1). Although beating Sligo 5-0, the 4-1 defeat to Donegal cost Roscommon a place at the knockout stage. Dublin went on to win the event which was held at The West County Hotel in Ennis.
