Roscommon retain Pete Donlon Cup

Sunday 29th January saw the annual Pete Donlon Cup being played between Roscommon and Long-ford in the Shannon Bar, Tarmonbarry.
Having defeated Longford the previous week on a semi-final run in the West Coast Challenge, defending cup champions Roscommon were in a confident mood. With the cup to be decided over 13 games, Longford drew first blood as Wayne Harris was unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a 2-0 result despite playing some excellent darts. Roscommon were not to be denied, however, and steadied the ship quick-ly with Thomas Concannon, Paul Carton and Joe Crawley all winning their games 2-0.
Then Longford pegged back the score to 3-2 when Paddy Connaughton was unlucky to be defeated on a 2-1 scoreline. Just when it looked like Longford were set to level the game, Sean Fleming took a vital 2-1 win in the next game, impressing under pressure to checkout 100 with his game tied at one leg apiece. Longford were not to be outdone, however, and were not left wanting when given a second opportunity to level the game. Despite good darts from both players, consecutive 2-0 defeats for Matthew Hynes and Patrick Tansey left the game tied at 4-4.
From here on in, however, Roscommon went up a gear. Despite losing the first leg of his game, David Concannon impressed with a 2-1 win, where he was aided by a 180 in his second leg and a 140 in his third. Lenny Docherty piled on the pressure further, hitting 125 and 140 on his way to winning his first leg and checking out 88 in the second leg to seal a 2-0 victory.
With the overall score at 6-4, Roscommon needed only one more game to seal their win. This task fell to Mark Finneran, who stepped up to the plate hitting scores of 100 and 140 on his way to a 2-0 win and a 7-4 win for Roscommon.
Despite the tie being a foregone conclusion, the remaining fixtures were played out. Rather than taking their feet off the pedal, however, the Roscommon players kept the pressure on as Mick Kilroe and Brian McCormack stormed to 2-0 wins. Kilroe, in particular, played excellent darts, hitting two 140s on his way to an 18-dart leg win.
As well as the 13 players who played competitively, three more Roscommon players played against their Longford counterparts on the day. All were victorious with wins for Gerry Owens (2-0), John Paul Feeney (2-1) and Sean Finan (2-1) to leave the overall score at 12-4. Feeney, in particular, played well, checking out with 114 in his win. Well done to manager Martin Fleming, captain Mick Egan and all the players on the day for the great darts and effort shown. Thanks also to all supporters who travelled as well as both the Shannon Bar and the Longford team for their hospitality on the day.
Attention now turns to this weekend as the INDO Inter-counties competition in the Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, County Mayo on February 4th and 5th. Last year saw a successful run for the men’s team. Wins over Offaly, Cavan and Clare saw Roscommon top their group and take their place in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately defeat to Wexford brought an end to the team’s involvement, but with a successful run at the West Coast Challenge as well as a Donlon Cup win, hopes will be high for a good run in this year’s competition.

West Coast Cool For Roscommon!
Sunday seen the start of a busy month’s darts for the Roscommon darts team, with the West Coast Challenge played in the Clayton Hotel Galway. Ten teams took part, with two groups of five drawn to play off. Roscommon avoided being drawn against favorites Donegal and Mayo, but still faced a difficult draw with games against home teams Galway ‘B’ and Galway ‘C’ as well as near neighbors Longford and highly fancied Limerick. Fifteen players in all traveled from Roscommon; Martin Fleming (Captain), Sean Fleming, Patrick Tansey (all Spell’s), Mick Egan, Paul Carton (both Widow Pat’s), Thomas Concannon, David Concannon (both McDermott’s), Wayne Harris, Paddy Connaughton, Lenny Docherty (all Kate’s), Gerry Owens, Brian McCormack (Flanagan’s), Mick Kilroe, John Paul Feeney (both Hollywood) and Sean Finan (Creaton’s). With each game decided over three legs, each of the twelve players who took part needed to hit the ground running. First up for Roscommon was Limerick.

Despite an initial loss for Sean Fleming (0-2), Roscommon stormed back with Mick Egan, Thomas Concannon and Wayne Harris putting three 2-0 wins back to back. Concannon in particular impressed hitting a 180 in his win, while Harris also hit an excellent 110 checkout. Unfortunately these wins were followed by three straight losses with Paddy Connaughton (0-2), Paul Carton (1-2) and Gerry Owens (0-2) losing out. Mick Kilroe helped steady the ship with a 2-1 win to bring the game to 4 a piece overall. However Patrick Tansey (0-2), JP Feeney (0-2), Brian McCormack (0-2) and David Concannon (1-2), were unable to build on this, with this losing streak of four games in a row putting an end to Roscommon’s hopes of a winning start.

Roscommon quickly got into their rhythm in this game with Mick Egan, Wayne Harris and Thomas Concannon laying down markers with 2-0 wins. Despite Mick Kilroe losing out 0-2 in the fourth game, three more wins were fired off in quick succession by Paddy Connaughton (2-1), Martin Fleming (2-0) and Paul Carton (2-0). The impressive 6-1 lead that resulted was highlighted by an excellent 180 from Paddy Connaughton. Despite Gerry Owens (0-2) and Brian McCormack (1-2) narrowly losing out, confidence was now high in the Roscommon camp and wins for Lenny Docherty (2-0), David Concannon (2-1) and JP Feeney (2-0) sealed the deal.

Despite Wayne Harris losing out 0-2 in his opening game, Roscommon started where they left with five successive 2-0 wins from Mick Egan, Martin Fleming, Thomas Concannon, Paddy Connaughton and Brian McCormack to leave the score at 5-1. Despite loses for Paul Carton (1-2) and Gerry Owens (0-2), any hope Longford retained of a comeback was quickly removed with wins for JP Feeney (2-1), Patrick Tansey, Lenny Docherty and David Concannon (all 2-0)

Roscommon knew going into this game that five wins was a must if they were to qualify for the semi-finals. If there was pressure on the players going in, there were little signs of it, and a 2-1 win for Mick Egan in which he checked out 160 in the first leg was a sure sign of this. Despite Wayne Harris and Martin Fleming losing out in their games (both 0-2), Paddy Connaughton (2-1) and Thomas Concannon (2-0) helped leave the scoreline 3-2 in Roscommon’s favour. From here Roscommon went onto a comfortable win dropping only two games; Sean Finan (0-2), Paul Carton (2-0), JP Feeney (2-0), David Concannon (2-1), Brian McCormack (0-2), Patrick Tansey (2-0), Lenny Docherty (2-0). JP Feeney in particular impressed with a 130 checkout.

With all group games played the table now read as follows; Limerick (33), Roscommon (30), Longford (25), Galway ‘C’ (23) and Galway ‘B’ (9). With the top two qualifying, Roscommon now faced a difficult semi-final against the winners of the other group, Donegal. The Tír Conaill men were looking to add the title to back to back All Irelands won in 2010 and 2011.

Roscommon were under no illusions over the task which faced them going into this game, and this was emphasized with a 2-0 defeat for Mick Egan in the first game. Wayne Harris rallied with a 2-1 win, but narrow defeats for Thomas Concannon (1-2), Paul Carton (0-2), Paddy Connaughton (1-2) and Lenny Docherty (0-2) put Roscommon on the backfoot again. Despite an impressive win from David Concannon (2-0), three consecutive defeats for Martin Fleming, JP Feeney and Gerry Owens (all 0-2) put paid to Roscommon’s hopes of a final appearance.

Despite this defeat the event as a whole was a great success for the men’s team. The fact that Donegal went on to defeat Mayo 7-1 in the final put the defeat and Donegal’s strength in perspective. Also a number of players threw excellent darts and will only benefit from the experience, leaving hopes high for the Inter counties Competition in February.

Away from the men’s run in the competition, Roscommon Youth’s also had a successful event. Three teams in total entered on the day, with two groups being played off. Group 1 contained Roscommon B, Mayo A, Galway B, Clare A and Donegal. Group 2 consisted of Roscommon A, Roscommon C, Mayo B, Galway A and Clare B. Despite an excellent 5-0 win over Mayo B, Roscommon C were unfortunate to come up short in qualifying from their group. Likewise Roscommon B were desperately close to qualification; wins over Galway B (3-2) and Clare (4-1) were not enough as Roscommon B came up short by 4 points despite only losing narrowly to Mayo A and Donegal (both 2-3). Success in the group stages came for Roscommon A however. Having taken 12 points from their first three games, Roscommon A needed Mayo B to take two games against Clare. Their near neighbors did not let them down, and as a result, Roscommon A, like their senior counterparts had a semi-final date with Donegal. Despite a brave comeback from 2-0 to bring the game to 2-1, Roscommon A were unfortunate to lose 3-1. Needless to say the event will have benefited all involved coming up to the Youth Inter Counties in February. A full report on the youth’s involvement will follow in next week’s paper. On a successful day for Roscommon darts, special thanks goes to Youth managers Sean Fleming, Tommy Beirne and Noel MacDermott for their hard work both Sunday and throughout the year. Well done also to all players involved, both Youth and Men’s, for representing their county so well throughout the day. Thanks also to those who traveled to provide well appreciated support on the day. Next up, the coming weekend sees the annual Pete Donlon Cup being played between Roscommon and Longford. This year’s event will be held in the Shannon Bar, Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon. Following last year’s success on a 7-5 scoreline, Roscommon will hope to retain the cup. However, following Sunday’s success, main focus will be on February 4th and 5th when the INDO Inter Counties competition takes places in the Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The Roscommon Youths will also take part in their Inter Counties competition in February, taking stage in the West County Hotel, Ennis, Co. Clare on February 18th.

A1 start to New Year for Wayne Harris

46 players took part in the A1 Roofing Singles in Spell’s, Ballaghaderreen on 7th January.

The ‘double in double out’ format seemed to bring the best out in a number of players. There were numerous 180s and high checkouts. The prize for highest checkout was held jointly between Sean Finan and David Concannon, with both players taking out 146. The highlight of the day, however, was the final between Wayne Harris and JP Feeney. Both players had played great darts throughout the day, and the best of 11 legs final promised to be a close encounter.

Harris took control early on, hitting two 140s and a 137 on his way to winning the first two legs. Starting off the third leg with a score of 100, Harris seemed to be in control. With 250 left, however, Feeney scored 180 and followed this up with a checkout of 70 to win the third leg. A 2-1 deficit quickly became an even game for Feeney with scores of 136, 134 and 100 in the next leg leaving the game at 2-2.

The high scoring nature of the game continued from here on in with both players determined to claim the title. The next six legs were evenly shared, leaving the scoreline at 5-5 going into the final leg.

Like the previous legs, this one also went down to the wire, but with scores of 134 and 125 along with some decisive finishing, Harris came out on top to win the title on a score line of 6-5.

Concannon takes Christmas Singles

David Concannon became the fifth winner of the Christmas Singles with a 6-2 win over Mick Egan in Sunday's final. Concannon had played well all day, and followed up good wins over Martin Murphy and Thomas Concannon, to beat Egan and take the title. Egan's luck finally ran out in the final, having used it all up in narrow wins over Brendan Harrington and Paul Carton.

There were 30 entries on the day, and a good standard of darts was played all day.

Many thanks go to Tommy Beirne for running the event again, and all who helped with the set up on the day and those who donated spot prizes.

McCormack takes Tommy Kenny Cup

Brian McCormack won the 9th running of the Tommy Kenny Cup on Sunday.

With all of his matches going to last leg deciders, he did it the hard way, but played to a good standard all day to win out the competition, beating Jason Duffy, Noel McDermott, Paddy Connaughton, Marting Fleming and John Paul Feeney. Some excellent finishing by McCormack saw him through, hitting winning doubles many times with only one shot at them.

Feeney opened a 3-1 lead in the final, but McCormack dug deep and levelled at 3-3. With the match at 5-5, it looked like Feeney would take it, but after Feeney bent the wire for double 9, McCormack stepped up to hit double 8 for the win.

John Part Exhibition

3 time World Champion John Part was in the Coachman's Inn, Roscommon for an exhibition on Sunday 11th September.

John was an absolute gentleman, chatting to all who turned up, and opted for best of 3 501 challenges against his opponents initially, before switching to 701 challenges later on. A number of local players tried and failed to beat him, but a few took legs off of him.

He finally met his match when the A-team (above) took him out in a 701 leg.

A real shame that more didn't turn up to see and play against him, but very enjoyable for those that did.

News Round Up

A quiet summer on the road for Roscommon's darters, with few travelling this summer.

In May, Sean Fleming reached the Grand Prix Final and secured a trip to Hull for the Winmau World Masters and Lakeside Qualifiers.
Sean lost out in the final to Jacko Barry, but a place in the final 2 was good enough to secure a place in Hull.
Unfortunately, due to the late scheduling and short notice given about the Masters and Lakeside qualifiers this year, Sean could not travel due to other committments.

In June, the Grand Finals of the Ireland Players championship took place in Kilkenny. Mick Egan took his palce int he finals, but failed to get out of the group stages. Cork's Damian O'Driscoll won the mens competition. Unfortunately, due to cutbacks, there was no TV coverage this year by TG4.

In July, the finest collection of darting talent Roscommon has seen in years gathered in the Coachman's Inn for an Open singles tournament. A host of Internationals, laced with PDC regulars and other local talents, fought out some superb games throughout the day. Barry Copelands 4-3 win over Sean McGowan, Connie Finnan's 4-3 win over Martin Heneghan and Aodhagan O'Neill's 4-3 win over Mick Egan being three outstanding games. In the semi-finals, Barry Copeland threw well to beat a decent Terry McNulty effort, and John O'Shea overcame Connie Finnan 5-4 in the game of the day. In the final, Northern Ireland international and recent All-Ireland Open finalist Barry Copeland continued his good form, beating PDC regular John O'Shea 6-4 in a top class final.

In September, Mick Egan and John Kelly travelled to Hull for the Winmau World Masters and Lakeside qualifiers.
Despite a lack of match practice Egan put in good performances both days of the Winmau World Masters and Lakeide Qualifiers.
In the World Masters, Egan lost to England's Pip Blackwell on a 3-2 scoreline. All sets went 2-1 in legs. In the final leg, Blackwell opened with scores of 140, 100 and 180 before finishing in 13 darts to take the win.
Raddie Szaganski from Limerick proved the best of the Irish, reaching the last 16 of the qualifiers, before losing out to Dutch player Christian Kist live on stage on ESPN.

A huge effort from Egan in Fridays Lakeside Qualifiers went unrewarded as he lost out to The Netherlands Christian Kist on a 2 sets to 1 scoreline. In a format where each set was best of five legs, the final set was decided 6-5 in a sudden death leg. With Egan having missed a dart for the chance of a 6-4 win in the final set, Kist hit back an took out a 107 finish for a 6-5 win in the final set.win the final leg. Kist progressed for a further 6 rounds to qualify for the Lakeside World Championships next January. Egan proved to run Kist much closer than many others with Kist not dropping another set until his final match where he beat Denmark's Vladamir Anderson 2-1.
Sean McGowan was the best of the Irish, reaching the last 8 before he too went down to Kist on a 2-0 scoreline.
Roscommon Youth and newcomer John Kelly was beaten 4-1 in the second round of The Winmau World Youth Masters having beaten Dutch opponent Lars Fransen 4-2 in the first round. Checkouts of 101 and 86 taking the final two legs of that contest.

The Widow Pat's celebrate first Cup title since 2003!. A large crowd travelled to Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon on Saturday last to see the most entertaining League Cup Final in recent times, as the curtain fell on yet another Roscommon County Darts League season. In a final that provided many twists and turns, The Widow Pat's of Knockcroghery eventually took the title with a 4-3 over Spell's of Ballaghaderreen. Spell's topped this years League table by three points ahead of the Widow Pat's but did what mattered most on Finals night despite Spell's best efforts and misfortune. The Knockcroghery side who won their last won the Cup back in 2003, made a superb start taking the opening two games courtesy of Mick Egan and Jimmy Reilly. Spell's recovered to level 2-2 with Martin Fleming and Denis Coffey wins. Spell's went into the lead when Patrick Tansey won. But The Widow's took the title with Tony Lyons and new found hero Stephen Beirne striking home the winning darts. Totals for the day: Legs played: 66. 100+: 136. 140's: 19. 180's: 4. 16 CHECKOUTS OVER 50. 116,113,113,106,104,102,99,98,77,72,68,65,58,58,56,52. Highest average- David Concannon in Sheild Final- 80.52 in 3 legs. Best legs- David Concannon, Mark Finneran both 15 darters. Game 1- Widow Pat's 1 Spells 0. (Mick Egan 4, Sean Fleming 3). Sharing 17 ton pluses between them in the game The Widow's Mick Egan and Spell's Sean Fleming played out a nervy opening leg which fell Egan's way after 30 darts. Both players were much improved in the following leg which Egan took in 21 darts. Fleming replied to level with 22 and 17 darters. A 72 checkout from Egan in a 21 darter seen him take the lead again but Fleming replied in the 6th leg with 24 darter. Egan's 16-dart winning leg included heavy scoring and no messing on his finishing with Fleming sitting on 154. Game 2- Widow Pat's 2, Spell's 0. (Jimmy Reilly 4, Eugene McDonagh 1). Eugene McDonagh started well in game two with a 20 dart leg. But Reilly managed to take the next four games with legs of 19,27,26,and 22 darts with McDonagh never too far behind. Game 3-Widow Pat's 2, Spell's 1. (Paul Carton 3, Martin Fleming 4). In a game where both players shared 24 ton pluses between them-Carton took a very one-sided opening leg in 21 darts. However, Fleming took the next three in 18,23,and 20 darts to lead 3-1. Fleming continued well, opening up the 6th leg with a 180 but Carton was to take it with a superb 113 checkout in 21 darts. Both players shared good scoring in the 6th leg which also went Carton's way in 20 darts to break the throw. Carton had the darts in the deciding leg and was first to reach the double after 15 darts. But after missing six darts at double and under pressure from Fleming's high scores, Carton had to suffer watching the Spell's Captain take out a 68 checkout adding to his 65 and 98 checkouts from earlier legs. Game 4-Widow Pat's 2, Spell's 2. (Pat Byrne 3, Denis Coffey 4). Neither player played near their best but it was Coffey's better scoring that kept him in touch in this game with twelve of the seventeen ton pluses between them going to Coffey. Game 5-Widow Pat's 2 Spell's 3. (Scobie Connaughton 0, Patrick Tansey 4). Patrick Tansey gave Spell's the lead in the Final for the first time with this win over Scobie in game five. Tansey's finishing being more effective than Connaughton's the key to his win. Game 6- Widow Pat's 3, Spell's 3. (Tony Lyons 4, Paddy Fleming 1). A 113 checkout from Lyons in leg four was crucial to his teams cause. After taking the opening two legs in 27 and 20 dart legs Lyons added the third leg with that crucial 113 in a 21 darter. The third of the Fleming brothers missing his first few darts at double. Fleming took the 4th leg in 18 darts with a 58 checkout but missed doubles in the next leg cost Fleming dear and Lyon's who missed some of his own capitalised on those errors to take the win. Game 7- Widow Pat's 4, Spell's 3. (Stephen Beirne 4, Sean Corcoran 3). This match provided one of the greatest lessons for any aspiring dart player no matter where there from. From the offing Stephen Beirne got stuck in and was rewarded in taking the first leg. All legs continued to go with the darts upto the sixth. Then was to follow one of the most dramatic legs of darts ever seen in the League. Corcoran opened it up with a well timed 180 and was sitting on 100 after 12 darts. Beirne continued down steadily. With both players trying to cope with all sorts of pressures both got stuck on their finishing- something rarely seen in the League. Beirne eventually struck the winning double leading to celebratory jigs and reels from the Widow's faithful. Shield Final. McDermott's, Ballinaheglish 4 Creaton's, Loughlynn 2. Preceeding the Cup Final was the meeting of Creaton's of Loughlynn and McDermott's of Ballinaheglish in the Shield Final. McDermott's done the business in this one. They were boosted in taking the three opening games courtesy of David Concannon, Pat Egan and Thomas Concannon. David Concannon- who was in top class form included checkouts of 104,52, and 36 in his 3-0 win over Tony Thacker. Pat Egan finished very well, with checkouts of 32, 99 and 40 in his 3-0 win over Brendan Scally. Sean Finan was aided by a 102 checkout in leg three of his 3-2 defeat to Thomas Concannon. Concannon's scoring was heavier throughout than Finan's but he was made to sweat it out until the end. Mark Finneran was the better player from the start and throughout in his clash with Joe Crawley. A classy first leg from Finneran included scores of 23,125,100,137,and a 116 checkout. Finneran included a 180 in the second leg but failed to strike double quick enough. Crawley took the third, and took the win while including a 180 of his own in the final leg. Joe Elliffe took out a 106 checkout in his 3-1 defeat to Adrian Doory in game five. But McDermott's secured the win as Andy Fallon beat Pat Reid on a 3-2 scoreline. Presentations. The Widow Pat's and Spell's of Ballaghaderreen meet next Saturday in Hannon's Hotel, Roscommon to decide the outright Winners of The Roscommon County Darts League.

Spell's reached the final with an 8-3 success over Kate's of Castlerea, while The Widow Pat's did so on the back of a tight 8-6 win over Flanagan's of Castleplunkett. Holding a 4-3 first leg lead, Paul Carton's 3-2 win over Gerry Owens tipped the game in favour of The Widow's, putting them 6-5 up, with Jimmy Reilly and Tony Lyons adding the points to put the Widow's through 8-6 overall.

History says the Knockcroghery side last won the Cup back in 2003, and were runners-up in 2004, 2005 and again in 2007. They contested the Shield Finals for the last 3 years, with success against Spell's in 2009, but that was sandwichwed by losses in 2008 and 2010. The Widow Pat's side have been unfortunate not to capitalise on their talents in recent years, topping the League table in 2010, but winding up beaten semi-finalists in the quest for overall honours.

Defending Champions, Spell's of Ballaghaderreen are back in the final for the second year in a row, and are aiming to win their fourth League Cup title following with wins in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Spell's topped this years League table by three points ahead of the Widow Pat's. In their most recent meetings Spell's beat The Widow Pat's 4-3 in Ballaghaderreen last November. But, the Widow Pat's enjoyed a 4-3 win of their own in the return game in Knockcroghery in February.

Preceeding the Cup Final is the meeting of Creaton's of Loughglynn and McDermott's of Ballinaheglish in the Shield Final. Creaton's were Cup winners in 2005 and will be aiming to beat the Cup runners-up from the past three years.

Previous results and happenings count for nothing on Finals night. With nothing seperating these teams, there are sure to be some cracking darts. Best of luck to all teams. All are welcome.

Mick Egan takes Tommy Kenny Cup success. The Widow Pat's Mick Egan won the 8th annual Tommy Kenny Memorial Cup held in Creaton's Bar, Loughlynn on Saturday last. Twenty-four hours after picking up his deserved Roscommon Sports Partnership Award for his darting exploits, Egan beat Wayne Harris 6-4 in the Final of this well supported tournament. It was originally due to be played last December but due to bad weather, road conditions and other fixtures, it was unable to be played before now. A total of 40 players from throughout the county took part on the day with the eventual winner recording earlier wins over Brendan Harrington (3-0);Cathal Hitchen (3-1);Martin Fleming (4-3); and Sean Fleming (5-2). Semi's for Egan in trip to Tipp!
Mick Egan reached the Semi Finals of todays Irelands Players Championships in Nenagh. 90 players took part on the day with Egan including wins over Andrew McCarthy, 5-0; John Herlihy 5-2; Ian Dobson 5-2; and Christy Fisher, 5-0. Having led 5-3 in the semi, Egan went down on a 6-5 scoreline to Campbell Jackson. It's easily the best run at a Players Championships event by a Roscommon player and keeps him on course to qualify for his third successive finals. Wexford's Stephen Byrne was winner of todays event beating Jackson 6-2 in the final.

Heneghan captures Kelly Cup.
Mayo's Martin Heneghan became the youngest winner of the Martin Kelly Memorial Cup which took place in The Hollywood Bar, in Roscommon town on March 6th. The 19 year old from Roundfort, and Ireland International was best of the 52 players took part on the day, with several counties represented. Defending Champion Mick Egan bowed out in the last 16 beaten by Francis Hussey who reached the semi finals. Recent A1 Roofing Ltd winner Paul Carton was also out by the last 8. Surprise package from all the Roscommon players present was eventual runner-up Alan Loughnane who put in some great displays both before and in the final. Loughnane also picked up highest checkout prize for his 150 effort in winning against Joe Crawley in the last 8.
The raffle which took place on the day raised €500 for Cancer Research.

Roscommon involvement in University Darts success.

McDermott's of Ballinaheglish team mates David Concannon, Mark Finneran, and Gary Concannon enjoyed success at the UDC U.D.A.I. All Ireland University Darts Teams College Intervarsities on Saturday with GMIT. At the group stage they beat Carlow IT (C) 5-0, Carlow IT (B) 5-1, NUIG (B) 5-1. IT Tallaght were opposition in the semi finals where they enjoyed a 6-2 win. After going 3-1 down in the final a 7-6 win over GMIT sealed victory. NUIG (A) Panel- David Concannon, Mark Finneran, Gary Concannon, Stiofán "DANGER" de Lundres Ó Dálaigh and Chris Clyne.

Egan on International duty.

The Widow Pat's and Roscommon Intercounty darts player Mick Egan travelled with the Republic of Ireland 6-a-side darts team that took part in the annual 6 Nations Cup in Scotland on February 25th-27th. The Six Nations Cup, featuring the national teams (men and women) of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands, was played at the Erskine Bridge Hotel, Erskine, Renfrewshire on February 25th, 26th and 27th. England Men defended their title, and Wales Women won out the Ladies competition. The Republic of Ireland mens team lost out 13-8 to both Holland and Wales, before going down 13-9 to Northern Ireland in the 5th/6th place play-off.
Egan was an unused sub for the first two games, before finally getting a chance against the North, and put in a decent effort securing 2 of the Republics 9 points.

Paddy Higgins Cup heads North.
The Paddy Higgins Cup headed North for the seconds year, as Tyrone's Campbell Jackson won the 2nd annual Paddy Higgins Cup held in The Goal Post in Ballinagare on February 20th in which nearly 50 players took part. Jon Paul Feeney was best of the Roscommon contingent having a run to the semi finals where he was beaten by eventual runner up John Bosclair (Mayo).

Youths title charge ends at group stage.
The Roscommon Youths teams charge for I.N.D.O. All Ireland Championship glory ended at group stage last Saturday. Roscommon's panel was divided into two teams with Roscommon's promising B team losing out to Mayo (3-2), and Donegal (4-1). Although beating Sligo 5-0, the 4-1 defeat to Donegal cost Roscommon a place at the knockout stage. Dublin went on to win the event which was held at The West County Hotel in Ennis. Good run for Men in INDO Inter Counties - attention turns to Youths
Roscommon Mens Intercounty darts team followed up their Pete Donlon Cup success over Longford ten days ago with a run to the Quarter Final of the I.N.D.O. All Ireland Intercounty Darts Championships in Castlebar at the weekend. Saturday's group wins over Offaly (7-5), Cavan (8-4), and Clare (7-5) meant Roscommon finished on top of their group. Opposition in the last 8 was Wexford who disposed of Roscommon at an earlier stage last year. However unlike Saturday last, Roscommon failed to make the desired start on Sunday. Wexford built up a 4-1 lead and despite best efforts, a 7-2 defeat could not be stopped. The run equals Roscommon's best efforts in recent years having lost at the same stage in 2008 and 2009. Bad weather since early December and a short Christmas break meant that the mens intercounty panel had not played together untill mid January. Familiar and new faces from within the Roscommon Darts League put in a great effort within the past three weeks to play well enough to make the Last 8. Four wins in five outings- making it a good three weeks overall.

Roscommon 7 Offaly 5. (17-12 on legs).
Saturday's group games paired Roscommon with Offaly, Cavan and Clare. Early performances were steady, although early nerves played their part. In Round 1 Offaly held leads of 3-2 and 4-3 and proved hard overcome. Mick Egan and Mick Kilroe got the ball rolling with wins. Offaly took the next three before John Paul Feeney used his best performance of the weekend to level 3-3. Offaly took the 7th game, but Patrick Tansey and Sean Fleming replied well to give Roscommon a 5-4 lead. Offaly took the 10th game followed by impressive and very important wins from Gerry Owens and David Concannon. Round 2 pitched Roscommon against Cavan where Roscommon burst into a 5-0 lead. Wins from Mick Egan, Mick Kilroe, Wayne Harris, Paul Carton and Paddy Connaughton seen Cavan take only two legs. From here games were swapped right till the end as John Paul Feeney dipped in form but was still unlucky not to make it 6-0 after putting in an opening leg that deserved more. Tony Thacker in his only display of the weekend made it 6-1. Patrick Tansey was beaten in game 7 just before Sean Fleming put in a very good display to make it 7-2. Roscommon produced some of their best darts of the weekend in this clash against a much improved Clare side on recent years. For the third time on the day Mick Egan and Mick Kilroe got Roscommon off to a perfect gaining a 2-0 lead. Clare pulled it back to 2-2 as Wayne Harris and Paul Carton failed to hit the mark. Paddy Connaughton's win over talented Clare youngster Sean Lahiff was crucial to the Roscommon effort as he produced a great display to restore Roscommon's lead. Connaughton's win inspired Sean Fleming to put in his best display of the weekend as he struck home checkouts of 96 and 100 to put Roscommon 4-2 up. The last 6 games were won in the deciding leg. A win from Sean Finan was followed by wins from crucial wins Gerry Owens and David Concannon booking Roscommon's place in Sunday's quarter finals. Roscommon 2 Wexford 7. First to 7. (6-14 on legs). Mick Egan opened up strongly against the darts in a high scoring opening leg against Noel Redmond. But a couple of missed doubles proved costly. Egan worked his way down to 48 in a good second leg but Redmond lashed in a 142 checkout to take the opening game. Despite missing a heap of doubles in a high scoring 1st leg, Mick Kilroe held his nerve to take a 2-0 win over Andrew Kavanagh to get Roscommon on the board. Despite the best efforts Gerry Owens and Sean Fleming, they went down in games 3 and 4 beaten with 14,15,16, and 17 dart legs. Jason Cullen striking checkouts of 142 and 54 against Fleming. Things got worse as John Paul Feeney was just pipped in game 5. Paddy Connaughton made it three wins from four on the weekend with a deserved 2-0 win over Andy Kavanagh to pull one back for Roscommon. But that was as good as the scoreline was to get. An under par Sean Finan had the odd chance but was beaten in game 7. Wayne Harris omproved on his Saturday's performances to put it up to highly rated Stephen Byrne. Harris took out a 125 in a 21 dart opening leg to hold his throw. But 15 and 16 dart legs from Byrne put Wexford one away from victory, despite the steady scoring of Harris throoughout. The Late Martin Hannon.
The entirity of Roscommon County Darts was saddened last Thursday to hear of the sudden death of Martin Hannon, Roscommon town. For over three years Martin had been kind sponsor and supporter of Roscommon County Darts. The County Panel had met in Hannon's Hotel last Wednesday night for a practice prior to the weekends All-Ireland's, with Martin speaking with players on the night. He was always friendly and obliging, making sure that everything ran as smoothly as possible before and during and after darts events at his venue. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and hotel staff at this time. May he rest in peace.

Youths aiming for All Ireland success.
The Roscommon Youths Darts team takes part in the All Ireland Youths Intercounties next Saturday and Sunday in The West County Hotel in Ennis, Co.Clare. Roscommon have been 3x time Champions in 2004,2005 and 2008. Managed by senior team player Sean Fleming and Tommy Beirne the team stand every chance of doing well on the weekend. All players and supporters from within the League wish the panel all the best. Travelling support is welcome.

Donlon Cup success for Roscommon.
Roscommon Mens and Youths made it a double success over Longford at The Annual Pete Donlon Cup held in Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon on Sunday 30th January. Roscommon's Youth side enjoyed a 7-3 win over Longford Youths while the Senior Mens team had a 7-5 win over their Longford counterparts in the main Pete Donlon Cup event. Bad weather since early December meant this was the first time that the Roscommon senior panel had played together this season. But with old and new faces, all combined to take what was a deserved success. Performances ranged from slightly rusty to the brilliant, in what was an entertaining clash played out in front of a decent crowd. Roscommon got off to a good start with a misfiring Sean Fleming taking the opening game. After dropping the opening leg Mick Egan- who was captain on the day- recovered well to make it 2-0 with a very steady performance. Longford took the third despite Martin Murphy's best efforts. John Paul Feeney aided by a 111 checkout and the outstanding Mick Kilroe gave Roscommon a deserved 4-1 lead. Kilroe sealed his win with two 18 dart legs. Game 6 went Longford's way as Sean Finan struggled to find form. Finan was followed by Paddy Connaughton who was improving as the game went on- but he too was pipped at the post. Gerry Owens after a sluggish first leg- finished clinically with a 16 darter in the second to give Roscommon a 5-3 lead. An under par Mark Finneran failed to play to his potential as Longford pulled it back to the minimum again. Wayne Harris took game 9 for Roscommon with a very solid display. Steady scoring key to his win. David Concannon's performance would have seen him win other games on the day, but his opponent Joe Nevin produced Longford's best performance on the day wrapping up with a 96 finish in a 15 dart leg to make it 6-5 to Roscommon. Patrick Tansey, who was Runner up at the recent A1 Roofing Ltd Singles sealed the win for Roscommon with a 2-1 win over Michael Reilly. Tansey went a leg down but held his nerve well to make up in some way for his A1 defeat. Play continued after the deciding game where Jimmy Reilly was beaten 2-1 in game 13. Tony Thacker, Pat Byrne and Lenny Docherty all secured wins to take a 10-6 over all scoreline for Roscommon. Although not having ideal preparation Roscommon deserved the win. Next up is The All-Ireland Intercounties in Castlebar next weekend the 5th and 6th of February. Donlon Cup Singles.
Roscommon's John Paul Feeney continued his good day to beat Longford's Joe Nevin in the Final of The Donlon Cup Singles in which 35 players toook part. Wins over David Concannon (3-1), Sean Clarke (3-1),Mark Finneram (3-1), Sean Fleming (3-2), was followed by a 4-3 win in the final over Nevin. The Youths Singles Final between Roscommon Youths Ryan Lynch and Aaron Lynch also went to a decider which eventually went Ryan's way. The Lynch's, both from Ballaghaderreen scored fairly steady, but finished very well with checkouts of 40 and 80 for Aaron. Checkouts of 40,40 and 64 coming for the winner.

League Update.
Round 14 of The Roscommon Darts League on Friday night last seen some of the best checkouts seen in the Roscommon Darts League for a long time with 6x100+ checkouts recorded on the night. Paddy Connaughton's checkouts of 161 and 136 in his 3-0 win over Mark Concannon were two of the best of the league so far. Richard Southam's checkout of 140 is 4th highest of the league to date. Wayne Harris added his 3rd 100+ ckeckout of the league with a 127. Thomas Conannon recorded a 120 checkout while Martin Fleming had a 108. David Concannon added 2x180's to his tally.

Battling Carton secures A1 Honours!
The upstairs venue at Spell's Bar in Ballaghaderreen was packed on Saturday, for the third running of the A1 Roofing Ltd sponsored Double in/ Double out Singles darts tournament. A total of 57 players entered, making it the best supported Roscommon County Darts event in recent times. It was the first darts test for Spell's upstairs venue and it despite the numbers coped very very well on the evening.
On an evening when the double in/ double out format tested everybody, it was Knockcroghery's Paul Carton who faired best. A 6-5 win over Spell's league player Patrick Tansey in the final, made up in some way for his runner up spot at the recent Christmas Singles at Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon. Carton- a regular player with the Widow Pat's darts team, maintained his form into this event and going one better this time. Wins over Derek Doohan (3-0), Richard Southam (3-2) got Carton through the first two rounds. Last years A1 Singles Runner up Wayne Harris also fell victim to Carton's progress with a 3-2 defeat and having led 2-0. Denis Coffey held a 3-1 lead over Carton but lost out on a 4-3 scoreline in the last 8. A battling Carton also overcame a 3-0 deficit to David Concannon before progressing into the final on a 5-3 scoreline.
The story of the final was both players checked out far better than they checked in. The opening leg of the final went Tansey's way with a 52 checkout. Carton responded with a 19 dart leg with Tansey sitting on 55. Carton started better in the 3rd leg. But after Tansey got away on his tenth dart he needed only 14 more to finish the leg. Aided by scores of 37,125,125,135 and a 79 checkout. The 4th and 5th legs also went Tansey's way to give him a 4-1 lead, ending with checkouts of 93 and 47. Carton made it 4-3 with two clean finishes of his own. But Tansey responded to take the 8th leg in 24 darts to go 5-3 up. From here on Tansey's checking in let him down. Carton took the next two legs reasonably unchallenged due to smarter checking in, making it 5-5. The deciding leg started better for Carton but Tansey dug in to have the first opportunity for the match. A miss at tops from Tansey for a 125 left him 35, but allowed Carton a shot at 127 from where he left 72. Tansey went in missing two further darts for the title but skint the wire twice. Carton returned to the board and took out the 72 on double 16 to seal his first Roscommon County Darts Singles success.

Kates, Castlerea 2 Widow Pat's, Knockcroghery 5 (11-15 legs)

Widow Pat's returned to the top of the league with a good win over Kates in this delayed round 9 fixture. Paddy Connaughton got Kate's off to a flyer, winning a top class opener 3-0 against Mick Egan. After missing a 101 checkout in leg 1, Egan failed to clean up on his return and Connaughton took the leg. In leg2, Connaughton missed a 142 checkout, but after Egan missed his double from 64, Connaughton cleaned up for a 16 dart leg. In leg 3, Connaughton missed a 124 checkout, but cleaned up on his return with Egan left waiting for a chance at 20. Wayne Harris and Paul Carton played out another exciting game on the night. Good scoring but some wayward doubles added to the tension and the game was finely balanced at 2-2. Carton scored well in leg 5, and hit a superb 146 outshot to take the win. All winners on the night played well at times and fully deserved their wins.

Christmas Singles Title for Sean Fleming.
Ballaghaderreen’s Sean Fleming produced a run of several stunning displays to take Sunday’s Rosdarts.com Christmas Singles Title, which was held in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon. Thirty-two players from across the county took part on the day in what was the fourth running of the popular event. Wins over Thomas Concannon(3-0), Gerry Kearney (3-0), Martin Fleming (4-0), David Concannon (5-3), and a 6-4 win in the final over Paul Carton sealed his win. A good number of the players involved showed some very good form, with some unfortunate not to progress further into the competition. Thomas Concannon was the big first round casualty. As was Stephen ‘Birthday Boy’ Victory. Wayne Harris’ double trouble cost him in the last 16, while Joe Crawley and Gerry Kearney also departed the race early on. Roscommon’s John Paul Feeney hammered in 4x180’s and a 118 checkout in his 4-3 loss to Sean Finan in the Last 8. Martin Fleming went out 4-0 to the eventual winner. Patrick Tansey was beaten 4-1 by David Concannon also in the last 8. Mick Kilroe’s run ended to Paul Carton in the Last 8. Although higher checkouts were missed- John Paul Feeney’s 118 checkout was the highest of the day. Sean Fleming with checkouts of 112 and 114 beat David Concannon 5-3 in the first semi-final. Fleming who had not dropped a leg in his first three rounds, was the more consistent player in this tussle, as he held out for the win. Sean Finan’s form deserted him in the semi finals where he suffered a 5-1 defeat to a steady performance from Paul Carton. Although dropping the opening leg in the final, Fleming started the final the better of the two, with more consistent scoring and good finishing. Carton stayed close but never got ahead a second time. A 97 checkout from the eventual winner aided his cause greatly just when Carton appeared to be launching a comeback.

After the Chariot's Frank Kearney had levelled the game at 1-1, the Widow's gretaer experience told, and they ran out convincing winners. Stephen Beirne won his first ever league game for the Widow's with a victory over a spirited Micheal Morahan effort.

A 15-dart third leg from Harris ending in a 76 checkout was also the best of the night.Paddy Connaughton made it 2-0 to Kate's before Denis Coffey got Spell's on the board including a 180 in his win. Lenny Doherty also included a 180 in beating Frank Duffy 3-0. Mattie Connelly sealed the win for Kate's with a 3-1 win over Sean Corcoran. Well done to Ballinaheglish's David Concannon wh became the 2010 UDAI (University Darts Association of Ireland) Darts Singles and Doubles Champion last week in Carlow.

No joy for Egan at World Masters
Mick Egan travelled to Hull with the Republic of Ireland party, to participate in the Lakeside World Championship qualifiers and Winmau World Masters. In Thursday's Lakeside qualifiers, Egan won his first match against Austrian Gerard Michal 2-0 in sets. A stiffer task awaited in round two, against Dutch International Gino Vos. Despite a good performance, Vos ran out the winner 2-0 in sets. Sligo's Sean McGowan was the best of the Irish, losing narrowly in the last eight of the qualifiers. In Friday's Winmau World Masters, Egan was an unfortunate loser in the first round against Scottish International John Henderson. Henderson won by 3-1 in sets, but Egan missed big opportunities in the second and fourth sets, and could easily have won out by the same scoreline. Donegal's Martin McCloskey was the best of the Irish, reaching the TV stages and enjoying a run to the semi-finals before losing out to England's Martin "Wolfie" Adams. McCloskey's run was the best ever by an Irish representative.

Irelands Players Championships Round 1. Kilkenny.
Mick Egan and Martin Fleming were among the 123 entrants who participated in Round 1 of Ireland's Players Championships in Kilkenny at the weekend. Egan lost out at the last 32 stage on a 5-4 scoreline to Kilkenny's Benny Grace in an outstanding clash in which Egan missed two darts to win. Martin Fleming had a 5-2 win over Limerick's James O Connor before being knocked out on a 5-4 scoreline to Ian Dobson. Round 2 takes place in Nenagh in late November. Killarney Darts Festival.
Mick Egan put in several top class performances whilst competing at the Killarney Darts Festival at the weekend winning 7 of his 9 games. Egan had three fine wins in Friday night’s qualifiers as he booked his place in Sunday’s John McEvoy Gold Dart Singles Pro Tour event. Saturday’s Gleneagle Irish Masters was also kind to him as he reached the last 64 out of a field of 350 players from Ireland and abroad. Two early wins were followed by a 4-1 loss to PDC Pro Andy "The Hammer" Hamilton - but Egan’s 83 average had brought some of the best out of Hamilton who managed an 89. Egan missed tops for a 157 checkout in leg 5, but never got back as Hamilton checked out. Sunday saw Egan explode out of the blocks with a super 6-0 win over Shane O Hara. A 90.18 average his best of the weekend. Egan’s participation ended in his third game with a 6-1 defeat to another PDC Pro Peter "Snake Bite" Wright. Egan won the first leg with a 132 checkout and with an 83 average was never too far behind but could not pass Wright who was beaten by Ronnie Baxter in the next round. Missed doubles in leg 3 could have put Egan ahead 2-1, but Wright gave him few opportunities afterwards. Martin Fleming’s tournament ended in the first round on both days suffering a 4-3 loss to PDC player Jon Arches on Saturday - having been 3-2 up and missing seven match doubles. Fleming lost out 6-1 to PDC Pro Wez "Av it" Newton on Sunday, Although not scoring near as well as his more experienced opponent Fleming had chances in 4 of his 6 losing legs bringing his involvement to an end.

AGM & 2010-11 League meeting

At the AGM, all current committee members returned unopposed.
Robbe Dolan agreed to assist the treasurer due to illness and family commitments.
Sean Fleming elected Youth Team manager after Luke Concannon decided not to stand.
Tommy Beirne stood down as Men's manager, no replacement manager elected yet.

Nine teams have expressed their intentions to participate:
Creatons (Loughglynn); Flanagan's (Castleplunket); Hollywood Bar (Roscommon); Kate's (Castlerea); McDermott's (Ballinaheglish); Spell's (Ballaghaderreen); Elphin (men's team); Knockcroghery; Chariot (Frenchpark).

League meeting on October 1st @ 8.30 p.m. in Hannon's Hotel, Roscommon.

Entry fees for all teams entering league must be paid on night when the draw for the league will take place.

Player lists should be provided by each team on the night. Additions can be made prior to league commencing, but not after the league starts.

The provisional start date for the 2010/ 2011 Roscommon County Darts
League is Friday the 15th of October.

Pub fee is €200. Players fee has been reduced to €10.

The rules are the same as the previous 3 seasons:

There will be a maximum of 12 players per panel, all of whom must be named and have paid the players fee before the draw is made.
No player can join a team after the league has started.
Team lists and contact numbers will be distributed to all teams as soon as possible.
Games will be played on Friday nights, starting at 10pm sharp.
Fixtures will be distributed to all teams.
Any game not played, should be played by the following Friday, to avoid a backlog of fixtures.
Game dartboards must be in playable condition throughout the league at correct height.
An oche must be in place on game nights and be correctly fixed in place and measured correctly.
The away team will throw for the Bull first to decide which team wins the darts in Games 1, 3, 5, and 7 on the night.
7 Games of Singles on the night, best of 5 legs per game. Maximum of 7 points
available on the night.
Any singles match which is not played (named player not present, insufficient players etc) will result in that singles match being forfeited with a 3-0 score.
Team captains will be required to maintain the scores on the night, so that points and leg counts should be 100% accurate at the end of the League.
At the end of each night both Captains will sign the score sheet making sure all details are accurate.
Scoresheets must be kept in good and readable condition.
The League will be decided on points scored, with the top four to play off for the overall League title.
Should any number of teams be tied on points at the end of the League stages, positions will then be decided on legs scored.
In the unlikely event teams are level on points and legs, a play off will take place to decide who advances. The play off shall take place at a neutral venue decided by a coin toss between team captains. The winning captain has the choice of venue, which must be from within the League.

The draw will be made on receiving fees and players names at the next meeting of Roscommon County Darts on Friday October 1st @ at 8:30 p.m.

Darts on TG4
TG4 will be transmitting two major Irish Darts events for six consecutive Monday nights at 7.30pm commencing Monday, August 9th., and the programmes will be repeated on the following Saturday mornings.
The All-Ireland Darts Championships from the City West Hotel will be shown in the first three transmissions followed by the Grand Finals of the 2010 Ireland Players' Championships in the Springhill Court Hotel in the last three programmes.

Egan tops group- but falls at knockout stage.
Mick Egan was Roscommon's sole representative at The Ireland Players Championsghips Grand Finals to be held in The SpringhillCourt Hotel in Kilkenny on Sunday. Split into 8 groups of 4- the top 32 players on the island battled it out fore the €2,000 top prize. Egan made a very good start in his bid for the title by topping his group for the second year running. He started with the most impressive of his three group games. A 5-2 win over Campbell Jackson was followed by a 5-3 win over Alan Reilly. With those two wins Egan qualified for the knockout stages but another 5-4 win over Eugene Ryan in his final group game ensured Egan topped the group. Mick Barry was Egan's opposition in the last 16 and it was Barry who opened up a two leg lead. Egan responded with two of his own before both players missed doubles in the fifth which swung Barry's way. A few bounce outs after that didnt help Egan's cause and while he still managed to get to finishes he didnt get a chance at them. Barry winning out on a 5-2 scoreline.
The eventual winner was Cork's John O Shea who beat Limerick's Connie Finnan 6-3 in the final.

INDO Mohill Spring Festival
The INDO Mohill Spring Festival took place over the weekend of 8th/9th May.
On Saturday, Mick Egan, John Paul Feeney and Krystof Wesolowski took part in the mens singles. Feeney and Wesolowski went out at the first round, Egan went out at the last 8 stage, losing out 4-2 to Meath's Steve McDonnell. Poor finishing at vital times cost Egan the game here. Mayo's Martin Heneghan won out on the night, beating Donegal's Anthony Whoriskey 6-2 in the final.

Tommy Beirne went out at the last 16 stage, losing out to Mayo's Martin Heneghan. Michael Timmoney from Donegal won out the men's event on the day, beating Longfords Stphen Ganley 6-2 in the final.
Olive Mcintyre from Leitrim won out the ladies event, beating Nicola O'Donovan of Cork 5-4 in the final.
In the youths, Jack Morgan from Ballaghaderreen reached his second final of the season, but went down 2-0 to Murty Brown of Tipperary.

After 5-3 wins over Glen Spearing (Dublin) and Andrew MCCormack (Wexford), he lost out 5-3 to Shane O'Connor (Dublin). The 4 points on the day secured his place in the Grand Finals. Congratulations to Kilteevan and Roscommon Intercounty Darts player Mick Egan who has qualified automatically for October's Lakeside World Qualifiers and Winmau World Masters by reaching the final of the INDO Grand Prix that took place at The Percy French Hotel, Strokestown.
On Saturday, Mick Egan and Tommy Beirne took part in the mens field for the INDO ranked Percy French Singles. Connie Finnan of Limerick defeated Martin Heneghan of Mayo 6-3 in the mens final. Mick Egan enjoyed a good run to the semi-finals, before some very poor finishing put paid to his good scoring efforts, as he went down 5-1 to Heneghan. John Joe Dolan of Sligo was the other beaten semi-finalist. There was a good turnout from Roscommon in the Youths event, and Jack Morgan from Ballaghaderreen was an unlucky loser in the youths final against Donegal's Geordan Boyce. Despite Morgan getting to the doubles first, Donegal's Boyce proved the better finisher, and won the final 2-1. Olive McIntyre from Leitrim took the Ladies event with a 5-1 win over Donegal's Angela Deward.

Superb individual performances from Flanagan’s Gerry Owens and McDermott’s Gary Concannon were the highlight of Finals night of the Roscommon County Darts League held in Hannon’s Hotel Roscommon town on Saturday night. A large crowd were entertained by some great tussles- with Spell’s of Ballaghaderreen taking top honours in the League Cup Final with a 4-2 win over McDermott’s of Ballinaheglish. Flanagan’s of Castleplunkett took the Shield title with a 4-0 win over The Widow Pat’s, Knockcroghery. 49 legs on the night decided the destinations of both titles with 5 more 180’s and 3 more 100+ checkouts added to the League tally.

Spell’s last met McDermott’s in the Cup Final in 2008 with Spell’s winning at the death.
This time it was McDermott’s who made the better start with Thomas Concannon including the first Cup final 180 and checkouts of 56,100 and 60 on his way to a convincing 4-0 win over Jimmy Finn who started to slowly early on. Winning legs of 23,19,21 and 17 darts made it 1-0 to McDermott’s.
Joe Elliffe took over where Concannon left off in taking the first leg against Sean Fleming in 22 darts. But Fleming found his range and included winning legs of 24, 15, 21,and 26 darts to get his side on the scoreboard.
Game 3 proved very important for Spell’s as Denis Coffey took a deserved 4-2 win over David Concannon. Heavy scoring throughout from Coffey as well as efficient double hits made it difficult for Concannon to pass and take a win. Winning legs of 16,22,19 and 23 darts from Coffey. Game 4 seen Spell’s Patrick Tansey take a vital 4-2 win over Mark Finneran. Both players scored better than they finished with 19x 100+ scores between them but Tansey remained alot more consistent throughout. Despite this the end result could have been either way due to the odd missed double from both players.
Spell’s Sean Corcoran was next up and found himself with the first opportunity to take the title in game 5. But after Corcoran taking the opening leg in 20 darts Gary Concannon took over and produced a very memorable performance to take a deserved 4-2 win. Winning legs of 21,18,17,and 20 darts were achieved with free flowing high scoring and very good finishing sparking hopes of a revival from the large turnout of McDermott’s support. Gary- who had been struggling badly with his game for the past couple of years deserved this win fully and players from all sides were very pleased to see him play so well.
Game 6 was to prove to be the last- as Martin Fleming beat Michael Fallon 4-0 to seal Spell’s 3rd title in 5 years. Although not the most impressive of games Fleming done enough to take the win.
Shield Final.
Flanagan’s, Castleplunkett 4 The Widow Pat’s, Knockcroghery 0. (12-6 on legs). Despite the lopsided score line last years Cup Champions Flanagan’s took this year’s Shield title with a 4-0 win. Of the four games three were won on the deciding leg.
Francis Hussey who started with 3x100's scraped by 3-2 against Jimmy Reilly. Reilly had a 180 and 110 checkout in the 3rd leg to take a 2-1 lead. Hussey eventually levelled in the 4th despite scoring very heavily had a 23 dart leg. A 180 from Hussey in the deciding leg gave him a slight advantage that he nearly blew but he just held on for the opening game.
Gerry Owens produced one of the performances of the League to beat Pat Byrne 3-0 and give his side a 2-0 lead. Aided by heavy scoring, including a 180 Owens had winning legs of 20,16,and 17 darts with an scoring average of 103 but dropped to 85.08 after missing a couple of doubles. Gerry Ryan beat Tony Lyons in the third and Martin Kearney wrapped it up in the 4th as he got lucky to beat Mick Egan. Egan had winning legs of 17 and 18 darts. But Kearney matched him with 18 and 19 dart legs and a winning leg of 23 darts. A 113 checkout from Egan was highest of the day.
Martin Hannon presented all prizes and the Roscommon County Darts Shield to Flanagan's Noel Ryan and the Willie Tiernan Perpetual Cup to Spell's Frank Duffy and Seamus Duffy.
A total of 2046 legs were in the played League this year. Mick Egan topped the 180’s table for the League with 10- just ahead of McDermott’s Thomas Concannon on 9. Flanagan's won the Shield Final on Saturday night, defeating The Widow Pat's 4-0. Francis Hussey won a good opening match with a 3-2 over Jimmy Reilly. Gerry Owens played the best darts of the night, defeating Pat Byrne 3-0. Gerry Ryan then took a tight game 3-2 over Tony Lyons. Marting Kearney wraped up the match, with a tight 3-2 win over Mick Egan in another good game.

Spell's defeated McDermott's 4-2 in the Cup Final on Saturday night, to win their second title in three years. Thomas Concannon took the first for McDermott's with a good display beating Jimmy Finn 4-0. Sean Fleming responded for Spell's, with a good effort to beat Joe Elliffe 4-1. Denis Coffey gave Spell's the lead, with a 4-2 win over David Concannon. Patrick Tansey increased the lead, with a 4-3 win over Mark Finneran. Finneran's lack of darts this season showed, as he failed to capitalise on a few chances against the high scoring Tansey. Gary Concannon gave McDermott's some hope, playing his best darts in a long time to record a 4-1 win over Sean Corcoran. Spell's captain Martin Fleming wrapped up the match, with a 4-0 win over Michael Fallon.

McDermott’s face Spell’s in decider
The 2010 Roscommon County Darts League Shield and Cup Finals take place in Hannon’s Hotel Roscommon this Saturday the 3rd of April beginning at 6:30pm.
Proceedings will get under way with the Shield Final between The Widow Pat’s of Knockcroghery and Flanagan’s of Castleplunkett.
In the main event at 9pm Spell’s of Ballaghaderreen and McDermott’s of Ballinaheglish contest the Roscommon County Darts League Cup final after their respective semi final wins on Friday night. The sides last met in the Cup final in 2008 and both teams retain most of the players that faced each other on a day when Spell’s ran out 4-3 winners. This year Spell’s and McDermott’s finished 3rd and 4th in the League stages. In the semi-finals, McDermott’s wasted no time on capitalising fully on their 5-2 first leg victory. The first three games in Friday nights return leg all went McDermott’s way giving them an 8-2 win over the table toppers. Mick Egan and Thomas Concannon recorded 180’s, Egan’s 10th of the League. A 100 checkout from Thomas Concannon was highest of the night. Spell’s were made to work very hard to progress from the other semi. For the second time in a week Spell’s had to recover from a 2-0 deficit. But two very precious wins from Sean Fleming and Denis Coffey over Francis Hussey and Martin Kearney gave Spell’s a 6-5 overall lead. Noel Ryan could have levelled for Flanagan’s but failed to hit the winning dart- allowing an improving Sean Corcoran in to give Spell’s their 7th game. Martin Fleming finished off the job for the home side with a 3-2 win over Joe Ryan.
There have been 1997 legs of darts played so far in the league, with 93 x 180’s and 41 x 100+ checkouts, the highest of which is held by Flanagan’s Gerry Owens with a 156 effort.
With both the Shield and Cup finals of both 2008 and 2009 going to a deciding leg, it could be expected that both of these finals will be equally close. Previous results and happenings count for nothing on finals day and the best of luck to all teams.

Youths fall at Last 8.
Roscommon’s had two Youths darts team entered at the I.N.D.O. All Ireland Darts Championships which was won by Mayo on Saturday. Roscommon’s B team departed at group stage while the A team were knocked out at the Quarter Final stage.

Ireland Players Championship Round 5
Mick Egan was the sole Men's representative, and departed at the last 32 stage, going down 5-3 to Daryl Gurney despite some good performances, which including a 161 checkoput for a 12 dart finish in his last 64 game. Galway's P.J. Moylan rolled back the years at the Green Isle with an exciting 6-5 victory over Mick Barry from Dublin in the final. Donal Egan made his debut in the Youth's tournament, but went down in the frst rounmd against more experienced opposition.

A repeat of the 2008 final will take place after victories for McDermott's and Spell's. Both teams will be appearing in the Cup Final for the third time, with McDermott's hoping it will be third time lucky for them, after losing out narrowly for the past two years. Losing semi-finalists Flanagan's and The Widow Pat's will contest the Shield Final. Good luck to all teams involved, and hopefully we will get another good attendance for our finals night.

Egan Wins 2010 Kelly Cup
Mick Egan won the Martin Kelly Memorial Cup for the second time with a 6-2 win over Sean Corcoran in the final.

Egan survived a big test against clubmate Jimmy Reilly in the last 16, before beating Sean Fleming in the last 8. One break of throw was enough to win a top class semi-final 5-2 against Thomas Concannon. Concannon included a 144 checkout - the highest of the day in this match.

Corcoran came through his board with decent wins against Paul Carton and Tommy Beirne, before taking a good 5-3 win in his semi-final against Noel Reilly. This game was tied at 3-3, but a superb 121 checkout in leg 7 swung the game his way.

The final didn't quite live up to the the standard of the semis, but Egan did more than enough to take the win, with more consistent scoring and decent finishing, including a 112 checkout in leg 6, and an 84 checkout to seal a 6-2 win.

There were 36 entries on the day.

Thanks to all who turned up and supported the event, with all proceeds on the day going to Cancer Research.

INDO Dungarvan Festival
Mick Egan and Martin Fleming travelled to Dungarvan for the first INDO ranking tournaments of the year. On Saturday, despite putting in a decent performance, Fleming went out at the last 32 stage, losing 4-1 to Kilkenny's Benny Grace. Egan reached the last 8 before losing out 4-2 to Kilkenny's Mick Meaney. On Sunday, Fleming lost out at the last 32 stage on a 4-1 scoreline to Meaney, and Egan lost out at the last 8 stage to Grace on a 4-1 scoreline.

Paddy Higgins Memorial Cup heads North.
Tyrone's Colin Maxwell beat Roscommon's Francis Hussey in the inaugural Paddy Higgins Memorial Cup Final held in The Goal Post in Ballinagare on Sunday. A total of 64 players from 10 counties took part in what was on of the best supported evets held in Roscommon for some time. Northern Ireland was well represented with almost ten players making the journey. However despite the excellent local support it was Tyrone's Maxwell who made the best of his journey. Wins over Noel McTiernan, Billy Smith, Tommy Reilly, and Roscommon's Mick Egan set up a semi final where he beat Derry's Campbell Jackson. Francis Hussey progressed to the Final with wins over Mayo's Damien Forkin, Sligo's Edward Gray, and fellow countymen John O Connor and Martin Murphy. A semi final win for Hussey over Armagh's Noel Gates was impressive but Maxwell took a 6-4 win in the Final to dash hopes of a home win. The Paddy Higgins Memorial Cup and €400 top prize heading Northwards for 2010.

Roscommon leave Intercounties dissappointed.
Donegal beat defending champions Cork on a 7-3 scoreline to take honours in the INDO All Ireland Intercounties at the weekend. Unlike the last two years Roscommon's mens team failed to qualify for the quarter finals exiting at the final 12 stage in Castlebar at the weekend. At group stage Limerick, Wicklow and Carlow were the opposition. On paper Roscommon and Limerick would be battling for top spot in the group- so alot hinged on that opening round clash. At early group stage things started brightly. Roscommon edged their way into a 4-2 lead against Limerick and were 5-3 up at best. But that progress was completely blown away as Roscommon were condemned to a totally self inflicted 7-5 defeat. That was followed with an encouraging 8-4 win over Wicklow- a game in which Roscommon recovered from a 2-0 deficit. For the second time in the day Roscommon were to blow a big lead- this time against Carlow. A 6-1 lead was well deserved- as players produced some of the finest darts ever seen thrown by a Roscommon team in the intercounties. But that 6-1 lead was blown away again- winding up with a 7-5 win. That win ensured that Roscommon finished second in the group and were paired with Wexford in the last 12 playoff where Wexford stormed home to a 7-1 win. Although full of effort Roscommon lacked any bite and turned in their worst performance when needing their best one most.

Roscommon Youths Win again
The next generation of Roscommon Youth Darts Players grabbed the first taste of success at the weekend as they won the Annual West Coast Challenge Event held in Sligo. The panel- made up of players from the Ballinaheglish, Castleplunkett, and Ballaghaderreen areas, endured a difficult and overly prolonged days play before they took honours. At group stage- wins over Sligo (5-0); Galway B (3-2);Donegal B (5-0); and Limerick (3-2) were recorded. A 3-2 semi final win over Donegal was deserved and that was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 win in the final over Galway A- who had been tipped for glory. Well done to the lads and managers. Over 30 of the best darts players from across the county took part in the event in which there was a prizefund of almost €750. It was the second running of the tournament generously sponsored by Seamus Duffy at A1 Roofing Ltd Cortoonmore, Ballaghaderreen. Sean Fleming won last year’s running- but this was the first time on Roscommon soil that the players were tested by the tricky double in double out format. At the end of the evenings action it was former Irish youth and Senior International Padraig Kearney who tasted the first local success of 2010- and his first success in some time.
The draw threw up all kinds of surprises, with all 4 boards providing equally tough paths through to the semi finals. While the new format would test any player, some of the counties more experienced players were to depart the competition in the first round namely Sean Finan, James McIntyre, Tony Lyons, Gerry Owens and Martin Kearney. Recent Christmas Singles winner Francis Hussey was also out after the first round. The second round seen Tommy Kenny Cup winner- Sean Fleming depart the race. Jimmy Reilly, Mick Egan, Noel Ryan, and Martin Murphy also failed to progress any further. The quarter finals seen Wayne Harris overcome Thomas Concannon on a 4-3 scoreline. A 120 checkout from Wayne Harris during that contest, was outdone by a 150 checkout from Thomas Concannon- which was the highest of the day. Martin Fleming overcame John Paul Feeney in the board two final on a 4-1 scoreline. Patrick Tansey pipped Paul Carton in a match that went to the death in the board three final. And Padraig Kearney continued his progress with a 4-2 win over David Concannon.
Both semi finals went to the deciding leg. Neither of the respective winners led at any stage, until it was over. Patrick Tansey led Wayne Harris 3-2 and 4-3 but a battling Harris got the rub of the green in the last two legs to progress at Tansey's expense. Martin Fleming held leads of 1-0, 3-1, and 4-2 against Padraig Kearney. But he could not hit that all important match winning double despite making numerous visits to the board. A fortunate- but relieved Kearney reaching the final with a 5-4 win.
In the Final both Kearney and Harris checked in better than they checked out. Hitting 42x100+ scores between them throughout, the first 6 legs were shared- all going with the darts. Kearney opened up with a 23 darter ending with a 66 checkout. A nervy 2nd leg was taken by Harris before an 18 darter from Kearney made it 2-1. A 19 dart leg from Harris levelled again. But Kearney with a 20 dart leg took the lead again in the 5th. Harris struggled through the 6th leg to take it. Kearney slipped up by missing doubles out in the 7th leg as Harris broke the throw. Kearney responded to take the 8th leg but Harris managed to break the throw again in the 9th leg in a 20 darter to take the lead again. But Harris- who was now throwing with the darts for the match failed to get off in the 10th leg until his 11th dart and handed Kearney a head start which he used to good effect. With the score now at 5-5, Kearney stood up to the task much better. Although Kearney failed to get away until his 4th dart Harris failed to capitalize on that error. Scores of 135,140, and 100 aided Kearney down to his match winning checkout on double 8.

10 years of the Roscommon Darts League.
The early days of the Roscommon Darts League from 2000-2002 was dominated by Flanagan's of Castleplunkett. Captained by John Kearney- it was him who helped to bring together what was- and still is a great group of players. Sadly John passed away suddenly a few months after their 3rd title. But three more titles have followed since in 2004, 2007 and most recently in 2009- with alot of the original panel still involved. Thanks to the Flanagan's crew for the use of their photos.

Francis Hussey claims Christmas Singles.
Francis Hussey- who plays his darts with Flanagan's of Castleplunkett, won the annual Roscommon County Darts Christmas Singles on Sunday. More than 30 players from across the County were in Hannon's Hotel in Roscommon on Sunday for the event which produced some top quality darts. Pick of the bunch was the tussle between last years Christmas Singles winner Mick Egan and last weeks Tommy Kenny Cup winner Sean Fleming in the last 8. Egan's next game in the Semi Final with Thomas Concannon is also worthy of mention. Egan's 160 checkout in the opening leg of that clash was highest of the day. Both players averaged near 90 for the first 4 legs before settling back into the mid 80's in what was a very entertaining game.
Wayne Harris and and Jimmy Reilly also produced notable performances. Hussey's route to victory included early wins over Luke Concannon (3-0) and Denis Coffey (3-1). A 4-0 win over David Concannon in the last 8 was followed with a 5-0 win over Padraig Kearney in the Semi-Final. A 6-4 win in the Final over Ballinaheglish's Thomas Concannon completed victory.
In the final both players had 29 ton pluses between them. 20 for Hussey- 9 for Concannon. Despite the obvious high scoring difference- Thomas Concannon did post alot of 80 and 90+ scores which kept him close right throughout. Concannon got a long opening leg out of the way with a 26 darter. But all legs thereafter were of high quality. Hussey took the next three in 19,18, and 19 darts before Concannon took a 20 darter to make it 3-2. Hussey with another 19 darter made it 4-2- before the quickest leg-a 17 darter- came from Concannon. Yet another 19 dart leg from Hussey left him one away from victory but an 18 dart reply from an improving Concannon made it 5-4. Hussey's winning 17 dart leg ended with a 60 checkout with Concannon sitting on a 80.

Tommy Kenny Cup win for Sean Fleming.
Ballaghaderreen's Sean Fleming won the 7th annual Tommy Kenny Cup which took place in Creaton's Bar Loughlynn on Sunday. It was a well supported event again as near 40 players from across took part on the day. In it's previous six runnings and has produced 5 different winners- visiting 4 different parts of the county. Now after losing the Finals of 2005,2006,and 2007, Sean Fleming has his name engraved on the Cup forever. And deservedly so. His route to the victory was tough with wins over Patrick Tansey (3-1),Padraig Doory (3-0), Thomas Concannon (3-2), Sean Finan (4-2), Pat Reid (5-1). And a 6-4 win in the Final against his brother Martin wrapped it up. Last years winner-Ballinaheglish player David Concannon had his run stopped by Spell's Sean Corcoran in the Last 8. Jimmy Reilly also beaten in the Last 8 by Martin Fleming. Sean Finan also went out in the Last 8 to the eventual winner. And Pat Reid wound up the Last 8 with a well fought win over Wayne Harris. The first Semi Final seen Creaton's favourite Pat Reid face Sean Fleming. Both players shared the first two legs but despite Reid staying close he could not get to a double in the remaining legs and Fleming ended up a 5-1 winner. A 106 checkout in leg 1 setting on his way with legs of 21,16,21,22,and 20 darts.. The second semi pitched Spell's teammates Sean Corcoran and Martin Fleming against each other. Like Reid- Corcoran stayed close but could not get a shot at a double and the elder of the Flemings's progressed to the Final with winning legs of 19,14,24,20 and 28 darts. In a repeat of the 2006 Final it was again of top quality with the longest leg being 22 darts and 34x100+ scores between them. 16 for the winner, 19 for the runner up. The first five legs all went with the darts. Legs 1,3 and 5 were took by Sean in 21,18,and 21 darts. Legs 2 and 4 by Martin in 21 and 15 darts. But the younger Fleming broke the throw in a 21 dart sixth leg to create a gap which was never threatened. Sean continued with a 20 dart- 7th leg before a mini revival seen Martin take the 8th and 9th legs and 22 and 19 darts. However the tenth leg was to be the last as the Sean Fleming became winner with a 16 dart leg that included scores of 68,85,140,140,36, and 32 checkout. Presentations were made by Sinead Kenny to Wayne Harris for highest checkout (130),Pat Reid, Sean Corcoran, Martin Fleming and to the winner himself. Ballaghaderreen's Aoife Doohan was lady of the tournament. Thanks to the Creaton family for hosting the event and for the refreshments which were excellent yet again.

Power Surge In Killarney
Phil "The Power" Taylor completed the double over the weekend of October 16th to 18th, at the Killarney Darts Festival held in the INEC, with 56 PDC Pros over for the weekend of darts. On Saturday, he came through an entry of 333 players to defeat Wayne "The Wanderer" Jones 6-1 in the final of the Gleneagle Irish Masters. On Sunday, he came through an entry of 161 players to defeat Paul Nicholson 6-0 in the final of the John McEvoy Gold Dart Classic. The Power was in imperious form, dropping only 4 legs in 7 matches on Sunday.
Mick Egan got the draw that everyone wanted and nobody wanted, when he drew the 14 time world champion in the first round on Sunday. Egan put in a good effort, but went down 6-0, although he had chances to win 2 legs, and was close enough in a few others.

The Power lived up to his name on Sunday, averaging 115 in his second match against Pak O'Donovan (6-0), and then defeating Wayne Mardle (6-1), Michael van Gerwen (6-0), Andy Hamilton (6-1) and Wayne Jones (6-2), before taking out Paul Nicholson 6-0 in the final.

It was an unbelievable experience for Egan, playing Taylor in competition, and being up close to the Phil Taylor circus, it was easy to see why The Power is head and shoulders above everybody else.

More players, more games, more darts!!!!
The 11th Roscommon County Darts League will begin this week with over 100 players from across the county taking part over the next 5 months.
Round 1 on the 16th of October sees Timmy's of Elphin host the Widow Pat's of Knockcroghery. Timmy's (same team, same venue,different team name!)- were very competitive for most of last year and retain alot of their players. The Knockcroghery outfit rotate their home venue every third year and represent the Widow Pat's this time. Both sides are a good bet to make the last four as long as they dont drop easy points.
2005 Champions Creaton's of Loughlynn host first time entrants The Tower Bar of Elphin. Creaton's have a mixture of experience and youth. They struggled last year and will have to rely on the younger players to pick up more points this time to make the top 4. The Tower Bar (The Beauties and The Beasts!!!) have 9 ladies and 3 fellas on board. A couple of points from this fixture would be encouraging early on.
McDermott's of Ballinaheglish host The Hollywood of Roscommon Town. McDermott's have been involved on finals night for the past three years. In 2007 as Shield winners- and in 08 and 09 as losing Cup finalists. This may be their year. They took 7 from this fixture last year something the Roscommon boys will set out to overturn. The Hollywood is a new venue for the Roscommoners who were unlucky not to have picked up better results throughout last years league.
Spell's topped the table last year- but efforts were destroyed by McDermott's in the second semi final last year. Kate's of Castlerea travel to Ballaghaderreen having lost some good players over the summer. But a good game is expected all the same.
Reigning Champions Flanagan's of Castleplunkett have to wait until next week to open their campaign.

The Roscommon County Darts League will remain almost the same format as last year.
*Team or Publicans fee is €200, to be paid before the draw is made.
*Player fee €20 per player. And €10 per Youth player to be paid before the draw is made.
*Fixtures are to be played on Friday nights.
*Fixtures which are not played on the schedueled night must be played within the week, before the following Friday.
*For the Final Week of Fixtures all Matches throughout the county will be played simultaneusly- no exceptions.
*Maximum of 12 players per panel-all of whom must be named and paid players fee before draw is made. No player can join any team thereafter.
*Games are to start at 10pm Sharp.
*Game Dartboards must be in playable condition throughout the league at correct height.
*Oche must be in place on game nights and be correctly fixed in place and measure correctly.
*Away team throw for the Bull first to decide which team wins the darts in Games 1, 3, 5, and 7 on the night.
*7 Games of Singles on the night, best of 5 legs per game. Maximum of 7 points available on the night.
*Team Captains will be required to maintain the scores on the night, so that points and leg count should be 100% accurate at the end of the League. At the end of each night both Captains will sign the scoresheet making sure all details are accurate. Scoresheets must be kept in good and readable condition.
*The League will be decided on points scored, with the top four to playoff for overall League title.*Should any number of teams be tied on points at the end of the League stages -positions will then be decided on legs scored.
*In the unlikely event teams are level on points and legs- a playoff will take place to decide who advances. The playoff shall take place at a neutral venue decided by a coin toss between team captains. Winning Captain has the choice of Venue which must be from within the League.
*The provisional start date for the 2009/2010 Hannon’s Hotel Roscommon County Darts League is the Friday, 16th of October.

No Silverware but super mixed grills!
Although Roscommon Darts players returned from The Winmau World Masters in Bridlington with no silverware, great experience was gained from playing in the World famous event. All the mixed grill dinners I ate in The Southcliff Hotel were bloody lovely too!!

Thursday's Lakeside Qualifiers were kindest to Mick Egan who after a deserved 2-0 win over fellow countryman Damien O Driscoll was defeated 2-0 by England's Sean Greatbatch (3-2 both sets). Both Sean and Martin Fleming were beaten in their first round games. Sean losing 2-1 Martin losing 2-0. Both played decently. As Thursday's Qualifiers came to a close, Donegal's Martin McCloskey sealed his place in The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships which take place next January.
Friday's Winmau World Masters seen similiar fortunes for Roscommon players. Martin Fleming won his first round match 3-0 and eased into round two where he was defeated 3-0 by Martin Atkins. Sean Fleming and Mick Egan were both beaten in their first encounters. Despite losing in the early stages of both events all three played well first time out. With high hopes of good progress prior to the tournament Thomas Concannon and Mark Finneran were both knocked out of the Youths Championship early on. Limerick's Connie Finnan was best of the Irish reaching the QF.
Lessons were learned at the qualifiers, and as has been said before, the difference is the quality of the finishing. Take your chances when you get them, and you will have every chance of a good run and appearing on the TV. Roll on next year!!

Roscommon Five for World Masters
Five Roscommon Darts players will make their way to England next week for the World's oldest and most famous darts tournament. The Winmau World Masters which is now in it's 36th year will bring together over 400 players from more than 50 countries.
Mick Egan, Martin Fleming, and Sean Fleming are the first Roscommon men to ever play in the Masters. Mark Finneran and Thomas Concannon will play in the Youths Masters which is a highly competitive piece in the four day event which will be broadcast live on BBC on Saturday and Sunday the 5th and 6th of September. All five have played for Roscommon for the past number of years and are regulars on the INDO's National Ranking System.

Martin Kelly Cup Champion Qualifies for PDC World Championships
Cavan man Aodhagen O Neill who was winner of the Martin Kelly Cup Darts Tournament held in The Hollywood Bar in Roscommon last April has qualified for the preliminary round of the PDC World Darts Championship in December. He done so after winning the Tom Kirby Matchplay in Dublin last weekend. He is wished every success.

Great day For Roscommon In Kilkenny.
Mark Finneran and Thomas Concannon returned home to Oran with titles under their belts, winning their respective youth competitions at the Ireland Players Championship Finals in Kilkenny. It proved to be a good day for Oran, as McDermotts team mate Gerry Fallon won the 2009 All Ireland Poc Fada competition (singles and pairs).
Finneran won the Youth Championship competition, beating pre-tournament favourite Paddy Meaney from Kilkenny 3-2, with all legs won against the throw.
Concannon, the pre-tournament favourite for the Youth Plate competition, won that out on the day, beating Dublin's Dylan Routledge 3-0.
The hat-trick was on for Roscommon, but Mick Egan's early form sadly deserted him, as he went down at the quarter final stage in the Mens competition, to a very good Peter Quinn effort.
Despite some good earlier performances, with 3 wins in the group stage against John Elder (Antrim) 5-1, Fred Holligan (Laois) 5-2, and Dominic Fenlon (Wexford) 5-0, and 5-4 win over an excellent James Broderick (Kerry) effort in the last 16, Egan's last ever effort for Roscommon fell short, as Quinn - in the best display at the last eight stage with a 90 average - gained a deserved 5-1 win.
Quinn won through to the final, beating Cavans Aodhagan O'Neill in his semi-final. John Elder from Antrim, defeated another Antrim player, Brian Cathcart in the quarter finals, and Dublin's Garrett Gray in his semi-final.
John Elder won out the cometition, beating Quinn 6-4 in the final. Elder managed to get on top of Quinn from the start. Despite a mini revival from Quinn, including a 157 checkout in leg 9, Elder held on for a deserved win.
It was ironic in the end, as Egan had beaten Elder 5-1 earlier in the day in the group stages, but Elder improved from his bad start, to finally win his first Ireland Player's Championship.
Grand Finals day also marked the re-appearance of Kerry's Sean Marshall, who has been battling serious illness for several months. It was a welcome return to a great dart player and a very popular member of the national darting fraternity We wish him well on the road to a full recovery.

Ireland Players Championships Grand Finals.
The Ireland Players Championships Grand Finals take place next Saturday August 1st from 12 noon- in the Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny. Roscommon county player Mick Egan from Kilteevan is the only Roscommon man to qualify for the finals after six ranking events held over the past 9 months. A total of 32 players seperated into 8 groups battle it out for the mens title- with Egan in a group that consists of John Elder, Dominic Fenlon, and Fred Holligan. Top two in each group go forward to the knockout stages.
Mark Finneran will hope to continue his very good form as he aims to take top honours in the Youths Championship and takes on Tipperary's James Gearon in the 8 player shootout. Mark lost to Ballinaheglish's David Concannon in the Final last year but carries better form into this years event- form which almost landed him a 9-darter last weekend also in Kilkenny. O'Connor Takes Park Inn Singles
Luke Concannon, Mark Finneran, Sean Fleming and Mick Egan travelled to Kilkenny, and joined a field of 54 for an open singles at the Park Inn, Kilkenny city.
Luke Concannon and Mark Finneran were first round casualties. Finneran was particularly unlucky when going down to Fermanagh's Brendan Dolan. Finneran was on for the perfect 9-darter at one stage, hitting seven treble 20's, but he missed the treble 19.
Sean Fleming reached the last 16, before losing to Egan. Egan had the best run on the day, beating Jacko Barry (Dublin), Mick Dwyer (Kilkenny), Fleming and John Boisclair (Mayo) to reach the semi-finals. Egan lost out at the semi-final stage to eventual winner William O'Connor (Limerick). O'Connor won out on the day, beating Steve McDonnell (Meath).

Bronze for Irish at Europe Cup
Well done the Irish team who claimed an excellent third spot at the 2009 Europe Cup in Eindhoven, Holland at the weekend. Managed by Kilkenny's Tom Keogh- Mark Finneran, Thomas Concannon, Martin Heneghan from Mayo and Kilkenny's Paddy Meaney were all in excellent form at the weekend.
In the Boys Singles Mark Finneran lost to the eventual winner Oscar Lukasiak in the Semi-Final on stage on Saturday morning. Mark progressed with wins on Friday over opponents from Wales (3-0), Hungary (3-1), Sweden (3-2) and Russia (2-1). Mark's run was one of the best by an Irish player in the 20 year history of the event. Thomas Concannon was unlucky to be beaten 3-2 in legs by Swedish opponent Birk Kamp in the first round on Friday. Martin Heneghan was beaten 3-2 by Dutch opponent Gilbert Van Der Meyden in Round 2. Paddy Meaney also lost to the eventual winner Oscar Lukasiak in the QF.
In the Boys Pairs- after a 1st round win over an English pair Mark Finneran and Thomas Concannon exited after a last 16 loss to Finnish opponents on a 3-2 scoreline who were eventual runners up. Martin Heneghan and Paddy Meaney exited at the QF stage losing out to eventual winners Oscar Lukasiak and Edmund Torbjonsson from Sweden.
The good form showed by the Irish lads in the Singles and Pairs continued in the 4-a-side Boys Team event. A blistering team effort on Friday evening seen 9-2 wins over Finland and Scotland which were hard fought before they stuffed Turkey 9-0 to reach the QF. A 9-5 win in Friday nights QF against a fast emerging Czech Rep. side proved very tough. Saturday's stage semi final started well for the Irish taking a 3-1 lead. Sewden replied to take a 5-4 lead. Mark Finneran took the 10th game to level but Sewden took the next 3 needing only one more to prevail. Ireland did take one more leg- but Sweden done enough to win out 9-6. Sweden came runner up to The Netherlands.
Day 1 on Thursday last was a decent one for the Irish girls pair. Kilkenny's Jessie Keogh and Galway's Aoife Ryan were knocked out at the QF stage of the girls pairs on Thursday evening. However that result was not to be repeated on Friday as they both suffered early defeats in the girls singles bringing their involvement to an end.

Superb support for Europe Cup pair.
McDermott's of Ballinaheglish was packed last Saturday night as over 40 regular, non regular darts players and non players took part in a fundraising challenge to support Mark Finneran and Thomas Concannon who will be two of Ireland's Europe Cup 4-a-side team that travel to Holland in early July. This was the second of two nights of fundraising which seen outstanding support come from their community and further afield over the two nights. Mark Finneran's team won the much coveted Bully's Charity Cup. After the scores were tied at 19 each Mark hammered Thomas in a play-off on a convincing scoreline of 1-0. Darts Fundraiser for Roscommon's Irish youths
The first of two fundraising nights of darts took place in Earley's of Bushfield on Saturday night last. 38 regular and non regular darts players took part on the night to support Mark and Thomas who will be two of Ireland's Europe Cup 4-a-side team that travel to Holland in early July.
Mark and Thomas captained both teams on Saturday night drawing their team mates from the hat. Thomas's team emerged victorious with a 12-7 win. Mark will have the chance to get his own back as the return game takes place in McDermott's of Ballinaheglish next Saturday night the 27th of June beginning at 9:30pm. On the local scene Andy Fallon was winner of the Jimmy Kilroe Cup in Cattigan's of Castlecoote recently, beating Luke Concannon in the Final. The event was held in support of AWARE. Tommy Kenny Cup winner David Concannon was winner of the Tony Mickelson Cup in Gannon's in Cregg's which supported Bothar.

Cork Festival Of Darts
Mick Egan was the sole representative in Cork at the INDO Cork Festival of Darts over the weekend of June 6th & 7th. On Saturday evening, Egan teamed up with Donegal's John Flood in the pairs, and had a good run, before eventually losing out 6-2 in the final, to Limerick's Connie Finnan and Meath's Steven McDonnell. The game was much tighter than the score suggests, with missed doubles from Egan and Flood at crucial times not helping their cause. On Sunday, Egan was unfortunate to draw the in form Finnan in the singles, and went down 4-1. Finnan won out on the day, his third singles victory of the season in INDO ranking tournaments.

Ireland Players Championship
No participants from Roscommon in the final qualifying round, Round 6, held on the 16th of May. Connie Finnan of Limerick defeated Gary Tipping of Down 6-4 in the final. Three Roscommon players will be participating in the Grand Finals in Kilkenny in August. In the Mens, Mick Egan qualified in 14th place in the rankings. In the Youths, Mark Finneran qualified in 7th place, and Thomas Concannon in 15th.

Roscommon players excel at Friendship Tournament.
Ballaghaderreen's Sean Fleming made his final appearance as an Irish U-21 at the 4 Nation Youth Friendship Trophy Tournament in Dublin at the weekend. It was Sean's seventh successive year involved in this 15-a-side event which seen the best young players England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Rep.of Ireland go head to head for the three day fest. The Republic of Ireland team fielded a very strong team with players from ten counties. Roscommon were well represented on the panel with four more representatives. Ballinaheglish's David Concannon, Mark Finneran, Thomas and Gary Concannon. In the end the Republic of Ireland team fell just short of the mark losing out to the English side by a single point.
A massive effort was put in by the fast improving Irish side over the weekend. Superb individual performances got them within sight of beating the well established English side- who now make it their 7th win on the trot in this event. The Roscommon players on the Irish panel did not dissappoint in any way and were responsible for 1/3 of the Irish points tally. Mark Finneran and Thomas Concannon were in excellent form winning all their games. Finneran's average of 83.34 was highest of the Irish averages in the Republic's 11-4 win over Scotland. Thomas Concannon's 12-dart winning leg against his English counterpart helped him along to an average of 90.68 which was highest Irish average against England. Scores of 134,140,180, were followed by a 47 checkout to seal that 12-darter. David Concannon also contributed well in the win over Scotland. But a couple of missed doubles in his next two games cost him dear. Sean Fleming saved his only win for the English clash. Missed doubles also costing him further wins. The youngest of the Roscommon's players Gary Concannon who has age on his side for years to come did not play this time round.
Thomas Concannon and Mark Finneran will represent the Republic of Ireland again in Holland this July for the Europe Cup. Their team mates for that trip to Holland are Mayo's Martin Heneghan and Kilkenny's Paddy Meaney. Both Heneghan and Meaney were also in top form at the weekend.

The Connaughts
Creaton's run in The Connaught Darts Championships came to an end with a semi final defeat to Reid's of Newport last Monday night in Walsh's, Charlestown. The Loughlynn team were last years runners up. Creaton's took the opening game and led 2-1 at the break. But Reid's- winners from 2002-2007- started the singles well and ended up 5-3 winners. Reid's of Newport took the title with a 5-3 win over The Ship Inn from Sligo on Sunday evening.

Ireland Players Championship Round 5
A total of 170 players competed in Round Five of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championships at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny on Sunday, April 19th. Mick Egan was again the sole Roscommon representative in an entry of 102 senior men. After some good early form in his first two games, an indifferent display saw him lose out at the last 32 stage to a very good effort by Jimmy Murphy from Limerick. Murphy went on win out the competition on the day, beating Mick Barry from Dublin. Egan picked up 2 points for his efforts, and should be safely into the last 32 for the grand finals in Kilkenny in August. Paddy Meaney of Kilkenny defeated James Gearon from Tipperary in the youths competition. Unfortunately, Roscommon had no youth entrants on the day. Full results to follow.

O' Neill wins Kelly Cup
Cavan's Aodhagen O'Neill won the Martin Kelly Memorial Cup in The Hollywood Bar in Roscommon on Sunday. The former Irish No. 1 won in 2007 and was Runner up in last years event. But this time round a string of classy performances saw him crowned worthy winner, out of a total of 45 players. Several Roscommon players featured well on the day with Jimmy Reilly, Sean Fleming, and last years winner Mick Egan knocked out in the last 8. However losing semi-finalists Mark Finneran and David Concannon were the pick of the Roscommon bunch. In what was game of the day, the O'Neill recorded a 5-2 semi-final win over David Concannon, with a three dart average of 92.86, finishing out with an 11-dart-leg. A 6-2 win over Mayo's PJ Kavanagh in the final began with O'Neill including a 180 in a first leg 20-darts. Kavanagh replied with a 21-darter in the second- before continuing to open up the third leg with a 180. Despite this O'Neill took it in 15 darts. A 14 darter from put the Cavan man 3-1 up. That was bettered to 5-1 with 20 and 17 dart legs and O'Neill missed three clear darts in the 7th leg to win it out but Kavanagh took out a superb 136 checkout to spark a mini revival. The 15-dart winning leg for O'Neill ended with a 101 checkout.

Flanagan's champions again
Flanagan's won their 6th title with a narrow win over neighbours McDermott's in a thrilling final. The Claypipe Bar won the Shield Final, as they defeated Spell's in a game that went to the last leg.

Roscommon County Darts League Cup Final for the Willie Tiernan Perpetual Cup.
Flanagan's of Castleplunkett were crowned the Overall Winners of the 2008/2009 Hannon's Hotel Roscommon County Darts League after a gripping 4-3 victory over McDermott's of Ballinaheglish. Flanagan's sixth title in nine attempts underlines their dominance on the local darts scene over the past decade- but this time they were made to work very hard having seen their 3-0 lead on the night obliterated by a stunning comeback by McDermott's. Kevin Kearney proved Flanagan's hero as he threw the winning arrow in front of a massive crowd on what was a great day for both Local and National Sport.
Game 1- Flanagan's 1 McDermott's 0
Flanagan's Gerry Owens and McDermott's Luke Concannon went head to head in game one. Concannon took the first leg- with both players well matched throughout. A 180 effort in his second last throw helped a battling Concannon but could not prevent Owens taking a 4-1 win.
Game 2- Flanagan's 2 McDermott's 0

Flanagan's Francis Hussey took a 4-3 win over the in form Mark Finneran in game two. Both players had put their teams into the final after respective semi final playoffs. Now pitched against each other they had 28 x 100+ scores between them- (18 for Hussey). Finneran took legs 1,3,and 6 in 23,19 and 20 darts. Hussey took legs legs 2,4,and 5 in 17,22 and 17 darts with 180's in legs legs 3 and 5. A 17-dart deciding leg from Hussey included scores of 137,100,121 and 60 taking out 83 in five darts with Finneran sitting on 90.

Game 3- Flanagan's 3 McDermott's 0.
Padraig Kearney increased the lead to 3-0 with a 4 leg to nil win over a double troubled Joe Elliffee. Kearney improved as the game wore on including a 180 in his 20-dart winning leg.

McDermott's Thomas Concannon took a 2-0 lead over Martin Kearney with 26 and 21 dart legs. Kearney replied with 18 and 22 dart legs to level. Concannon took the fifth and Kearney had one dart to level it in the sixth but missed before a stunning 94 checkout on the bull by Concannon opened up McDermott's account on the night.

David Conannon threw aside his recent under par form to produce an inspirational performance to beat a struggling Noel Ryan 4-0. Winning legs of 17 and 21 darts were followed by a sloppier 30-dart leg before he closed out with a winning leg of 19 darts.
Game 6- Flanagan's 3 McDermott's 3.
Brian McCormack and Andy Fallon felt the heat as their game went all the way to a deciding leg in what was a nervy encounter. McCormack had four darts to win it for Flanagan's but Fallon held on to send it to the last pairing.
Game 7- Flanagan's 4 McDermott's 3.
After six months of darts it was left to Flanagan's Kevin Kearney and McDermott's Michael Fallon to sort out the destination of the Willie Tiernan Perprtual Cup. Fallon gave McDermott's the lead for the first time in the Final in taking the first leg. Kearney responded to take the second. An 18 darter in leg three gave Kearney the lead before Fallon took the fourth. Kearney took leg five unhindered to set up a leg for the match. Fallon put in a massive effort to try and save the match with scores of 140,100,60,60 and 79- but failed to hit his double missing numerous darts to force a decider. Kearney with his fifth dart for the match made no mistake to wrap up the League for another year.

Roscommon County Darts Shield Final
Preceeding the Cup Final was the Roscommon County Darts Shield Final. Last years Shield runners-up The Claypipe Bar of Knockcroghery got the better in this one with a fine 4-3 win over last years Cup Champions Spell's of Ballaghaderreen. Spell's won 16-14 on legs but The Claypipe done what mattered most. Sean Fleming gave Spell's the early lead with a blistering 3-0 win over Tony Lyons who did very little wrong. Mick Egan recovered from a slow start to close out with 19 and 16 dart legs in his 3-1 win over Denis Coffey. Jimmy Reilly gave The Claypipe the lead with a well worked 3-2 win over Martin Fleming. Fleming had 180's in his 20 and 17 dart winning legs while Reilly had winning legs of 24, 23 and a 15 darts. Spell's Aiden Tansey beat Danny Byrne 3-1 in game four before Pat Byrne restored The Claypipe's lead with a hard fought 3-2 win over Jimmy Finn. Patrick Tansey ensured a deciding game with his 3-1 win over Scobie Connaughton. In that decider Paul Carton enjoyed a 3-2 win over Benji Hayden. Both players put in very credible performances but Carton's winning legs of 23,16 and 23 darts were enough to take the Shield home to South Roscommon for the first time. Acknowledgements
The 2008/09 league seen 8 teams involving 96 players play 1602 legs of darts between them. For the best part the standard was even across the county with the weaker teams improving on last year- and contributing to a closer and more unpredictable League. There were 63 x 180 scores of which 8 were from Mark Finneran's. 54 x 100+ checkouts were recorded- (16 more than last year)- with Murray's Matthew Hynes effort of 167 top of the pile. Mark Finneran topped the 180's list with a total of 8.
Although a small League compared to others across the country the Roscommon County Darts League is continuing to produce players that are capable of winning bigger things. The change in League format over the past two years along with trials and local competitions has given more players the chance to play more darts. Improvements are already visible and hopefully will be built on. Roscommon's quest for All-Ireland titles at Senior level is gathering pace. With the help and effort of players, organisers, supporters and sponsors all combined within the League can make it become reality.

Waterford kind to Roscommon Darts.
Less than 24 hours after guiding McDermott's of Ballinaheglish to their second Roscommon Darts League Final- Mark Finneran was runner up in Saturday's I.N.D.O. half ranked Waterford County Singles event held in Lawlor's Hotel, Dungarvan. Beaten by Limerick's Connie Finnan- Finneran had checkouts of 156 and 157 in his 4-0 Round 1 win over Sean McGowan. A 108 checkout sealed his 4-3 win over Martin Fleming at the Quarter Final stage in what was a very good match. Knockroghery's Mick Egan also had an excellent run before Connie Finnan beat him at the Semi-Final stage. Sean Fleming was beaten in the Last 16- just short of the points.
Sunday's main event- The I.N.D.O. Lawlor's Singles was won by Connie Finnan who made it a Waterford double. Mark Finneran and Mick Egan were both beaten in the last 16 while Martin Fleming went out in the Quarter Final having missed numerous chances to go further. Sean Fleming was beaten by Mark Finneran in the last 32. Next I.N.D.O. Ranking event is the Cavan Open in Bailieborough on March 29th.

McDermott's reached their 2nd Cup Final with a tight victory over defending champions Spell's, as the 2nd semi-final also went to a play-off. After McDermott's had overturned their first-leg deficit and took a 2 point lead, Spell's fought back to put the game into a play-off. In the play-off, Mark Finneran had too much for Martin Fleming, and McDermott's advance to the Cup Final.

Dubs Spring a shock in Kilkenny.
Roscommon's quest to land a fourth All-Ireland Youths crown ended in bitter dissappointment at the weekend as homeside Kilkenny dumped an unlucky Roscommon team out on a 3-2 scoreline in the last 8. Held in The Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny, 27 teams with over 150 youth players participated making it the biggest turnout at the Championships in many years. After a long and competitive days action it was Dublin who captured their first win with a surprising win over Kilkenny in the Final. Roscommon's day began on a positive note as they topped their group with wins over Mayo A (3-2), Tipperary B (5-0), and Dublin B (4-1). Shane McDonagh put Roscommon into the lead against Kilkenny before Thomas Concannon was beaten by Paddy Meaney. Mark Finneran continued his excellent recent form with a 2-0 win over David Coyne. Ray Finan had a chance to win through to the semi but was a fraction the wrong side of the wire. And Roscommon's involvement came to an end with when Kevin Fleming failed to win his game despite a decent effort.

Finneran wins Kilkenny Open Youth Singles
Despite Saturday's dissappointment, Sunday saw consolation of a kind as Mark Finneran captured the Kilkenny Open Youth Singles Championships, with a well deserved 4-1 win in the final over talented Kilkenny player Paddy Meaney.

Flanagan's reached their 6th Cup Final with a tight play-off victory. In a top-class game, with thirteen 100+ scores over the 3 legs played, Hussey's finishing proved the difference. Egan missed three in leg 2, bending the wire of double 16, and with it missed the chance to level at 1-1. Hussey took the leg with a 48 checkout, and took the match with an 80 checkout in leg 3. It finished of a tense and exciting evening of darts, and Flanagan's await the winners of the McDermott's and Spell's semi-final, the 2nd leg taking place next Friday.

Roscommon Youths prepare to defend All Ireland
The Irish National Darts Organisations (I.N.D.O.) All Ireland Intercounty Youths Darts Championships take place in the Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny next Saturday the 7th of March from 10am. Last year- Roscommon were made to work hard for their third title in five years eventually beating Kilkenny on a 3-2 scoreline. This year sees a couple of additions with David Concannon being the most notable loss as he is now over-age. A good number of supporters will be travelling down to Kilkenny- more are welcome. Ireland Players Championship Round 4 Results
Willie O'Connor defeated Radaslaw Szaganski in an all Limerick Final at the Clonmel Park Hotel on Sunday. Mick Egan was the sole representative from Roscommon in a field of 122 mens entries, but lost out 5-2 to Mayo's Padraig Hestor at the last 32 stage. He picked up 2 points for his efforts, and with 14 points should have secured a place in the grand finals in Kilkenny in August. Paddy Meaney won the youths event against Ryan Courtney.

It's semi-final time in The Hannon's Hotel Roscommon County Darts League. Defending Champions and table toppers Spell's will host McDermott's of Ballinaheglish in their first leg tie in Ballaghaderreen on Friday night in a repeat of last years Cup Final. Spell's had 4-3 wins over McDermott's in Rounds 2 and 9 of the League stages, something Spell's will hope to replicate over the next two weeks if they are to come closer to retaining their title. In the other first leg tie The Claypipe will travel to Castleplunkett to take on Flanagan's. The Claypipe have beaten Flanagan's 4-3 in Rounds 6 and 13 of the league stages- the only team to beat Flanagan's twice this year. Two thrilling contests lay in store. Best of luck to all teams.

Rebels make Roscommon pay dearly.
Cork are the Irish National Darts Organisation's (I.N.D.O's) Senior Mens and Ladies Inter-county Darts Champions for 2009, after a 7-4 final win over Mayo in the mens event, and a 4-0 win over Wexford in the ladies event.
When word filtered through Roscommon's darting circles on Sunday evening that Cork had won the mens championship, there was a massive sense of dissappointment of what might have been for Roscommon. Roscommon's under par start in Sunday mornings 7-4 quarter final defeat to the eventual champions brought to an end to Roscommon's ambitions in the Championships - at the same stage that Roscommon went out at last year. The fact Roscommon have made the last eight for two years in a row is further proof the county is heading in the right direction. But in 2009 all efforts ran just short.
Held in The Breaffy House Hotel in Castlebar on Saturday and Sunday last, twenty-four counties took part in the mens event - with Roscommon topping a group consisting of Carlow, Meath and Clare. The progress made on last years efforts in this years Championships by the mens county team has been yet again down to the massive effort put in by manager Tommy Beirne and all players from different areas of the county who over the past year have been dedicated to improving the standard within the county. Tommy Beirne wishes to thank all the Roscommon players and supporters for all their time and effort before and during the Intercounty season.

Roscommon have had the better of recent clashes with Clare. That continued as Roscommon took a convincing 9-3 win. Wins from Sean Finan, Mick Kilroe and Mick Egan put Roscommon 3-0 up. Thomas Concannon was beaten in game four before Sean Fleming made it 4-1. Clare pulled it back to 4-3 as Padraig Kearney and David Concannon suffered defeats. But five straight wins from Francis Hussey, Mark Finneran, Patrick Tansey, Martin Fleming and Jimmy Reilly sealed the win the put Roscommon in pole position in the group.

Meath, the recent winners of The Leinster Darts Championships, had their hopes of topping the group damaged slightly as they failed to build on a 5-1 lead. Roscommon beat Meath 7-5 in last years Intercounties but on this occasion Roscommon were very happy to settle for this hard fought draw. Francis Hussey and Sean Fleming took two of the first eight games followed by four successive wins from Padraig Kearney, Mark Finneran, Thomas Concannon and Martin Fleming.

Carlow proved to be very stiff opposition despite not being in realistic contention to qualify having lost 7-5 to both Meath and Clare. A disasterous start seen Roscommon go 3-1 behind but three wins from Mick Egan, David Concannon, and Mark Finneran gained the lead. Patrick Tansey and Paul Carton were defeated in games eight and ten but Thomas Concannon, Padraig Kearney, Martin Fleming each won to secure the quarter final spot.

Sunday's quarter final report
Roscommon 4 Cork 7 (13-15 on legs).
Lessons will be learnt from Sunday's Quarter-Final with Cork. For the third time in the weekend Roscommon conceeded a considerable early lead- this time 4-0. But there was to be no recovery despite the effort. Five of the seven lost games were deciding legs. Mick Kilroe's win made it 4-1 but that could not be bettered until Padraig Kearney produced an outstanding performance to beat Peter Quinn 2-0 to make it 6-2. That win inspired Patrick Tansey and David Concannon to their wins as they made it 6-4. Martin Murphy's efforts deserved more and he had opportunities to win but Cork's J.P. Dowdall got there first, bringing Roscommon's involvement to an end.

Pete Donnellon Cup Success.
The Pete Donnellon Cup is Roscommon's again after an 11-2 overall win over Longford on Sunday at Hannon's Hotel Roscommon Town. A minutes silence prior to the match in memory of the late Tom Finan was well observed by all present before all settled in for what was a very enjoyable afternoon of Intercounty darts. It turned out to be more one-sided scorewise than predicted although the homeside were made to work hard in almost all games. The result is ideal in the build up to next weeks West Coast Challenge in Castlebar in which 8 Western counties take part. Captain on the day Jimmy Reilly accepted the Donnellon Cup on behalf of the Roscommon Team. Mens Panel - Mick Kilroe, Gerry Murphy, Patrick Tansey, Denis Coffey, Jimmy Finn, Sean Fleming, Martin Fleming, Padraig Kearney, Francis Hussey,Thomas Concannon, David Concannon, Mark Finneran, Paul Carton, Jimmy Reilly, Mick Egan, Martin Murphy, Frank Duffy.
Roscommon's Youths also had a fine 11-3 win over their Longford counterparts for the Youths Plate. 14 Youths from all over Roscommon represented their county on the day- the largest number for the county in some time.
Fleming on top in A1 Roofing Singles.
Ballaghaderreen's Sean Fleming was the big winner of the A1 Singles sponsored by A1 Roofing Ltd. Cortoonmore, Ballaghaderreen. Thirty six players from both panels went to head in what turned out to be a competition dominated by Roscommon players. All Longford players exiting before the Quarter Final stage. Mark Finneran and Mick Egan played out a thrilling last 8 match in which Finneran popped in an 11 dart leg, eventually winning out with a 104 checkout and nothing to spare. Jimmy Finn clocked 180 and a tidy 118 checkout en route to a 4-3 win over Martin Fleming. Patrick Tansey came close to knocking out Tommy Kenny Cup winner David Concannon but the younger held on to win. And Sean Fleming completed the Last 8 with a 4-2 win over Padraig Kearney. In an all- Ballaghaderreen semi-final Sean Fleming was too strong for Jimmy Finn. Fleming opened up with a 14-dart leg and never looked back securing a 5-1 win. David Concannon and Mark Finneran played out a much closer semi in an all- Ballinaheglish clash. Both were tied at 3-3, but Concannon with a back to back 180 and an 88 checkout on the bull made it 4-3. He also built up a lead in the next leg and took it with a 126 checkout which was also ended on the bull to set up a final with Fleming.
Some recent Finals played out at Hannon's Hotel have been of very high quality, however this one was arguably the best. In the best of 11 clash-Fleming won the first two legs in 26 and 18 darts, before Concannon opened up his account in leg three with a 16 darter. Fleming went 3-1 up with an 18 dart leg that ended with a 107 checkout. But Concannon soon levelled it again with 16 and 15 dart legs with 180's in both. A 100 checkout in another 18-dart 7th leg put Fleming one up again. But yet again Concannon replied with back to back legs of 17 and 16 darts, both players adding 180's in the 17 darter. But Fleming was to take the final two legs in 20 and 18 darts with a winning effort of 75 with his opponent sitting on 50. It is the first time in six attempts that Sean Fleming won a competitive Final on Roscommon soil. Presentations were made by Seamus and Kieran Duffy of A1 Roofing, Ballaghaderreen to all winners.

Ireland Players Championship Round Three
Mick Egan, Thomas Concannon and Mark Finneran made the long trek to Tramore on Saturday for round three of the Ireland Players Championship. Egan was the sole Roscommon representative in a field of 129 entries for the mens singles, and won through to the last 8, before losing out to John Elder of Antrim. With board favourite Daryl Gurney still at the Lakeside, Egan took advantage to win his board out, and gain 6 ranking points in the race for the grand finals. Elder, who had missed double 12 for a nine dart finish in his last 16 match, won out the event, beating Benny Grace of Kilkenny. Concannon and Finneran took their places in a field of 40 in the youths competition. Concannon went out early, losing out to Jason Hahessy of Tipperary, but Finneran got all the way to the final, before losing out to Martin Henegan of Mayo. Finneran gained 10 points in the youths rankings for his efforts.

McCormack takes Tommy Kenny Cup

Brian McCormack won the 9th running of the Tommy Kenny Cup on Sunday.

Feeney opened a 3-1 lead in the final, but McCormack dug deep and levelled at 3-3. With the match at 5-5, it looked like Feeney would take it, but after Feeney bent the wire for double 9, McCormack stepped up to hit double 8 for the win.
